Thank God we weren't too late to change your mind on that one!!!

Your dog is a beauty and folding him into a D5 would have been utterly unthinkable Shocked For someone, like you, that really uses your D4, the D5 would have been a pale imitation.

One thing that I'd really like to point out is that taking the body off is no big deal for those that know what they're doing and gives access to the oily bits that mechanics working on unibody cars could only dream of! The body was taken off mine at 18 months and 30,000 miles old and you'd never even know that it had ever been worked on. So what if a decent specialist charges £800 for the service every 7 years, that's not much more than a main dealer will charge you for a service that's little more than an oil and filter change on a 5.

Highways England ran their D4's for 3 years and 250,000 to 320,000 miles. 80,000 to 100,000 miles has barely scratched the surface. Notably, they haven't bought any 5's yet and would appear to moving to Isuzu's.

Hey all, thanks for the fast replies

mea culpa, I meant timing belt not cam belt...

I have been tracking the Disco 5 since it was first conceived, and knew someone at JLR who gave me an inside track on its release date etc. It sure is a lovely car, but its no Disco 4. As for the boot/cage, you're right that the 5 is slighty wider and the pitch more or less the same, but its the height/slope where the cage would lose 30-40%. My Lintram Disco 4 cage is 35 inches high and even beyond the roof of the cage, theres another 4-5 inches before you hit the glass roof i.e. total height of Disco 4 is 39-40inches. Total height of Disco 5 is 35 inches max, and to access that I'd have to get a 'giraffe box' cage (roofless).

I actually have had my order form for the Disco 5 sat infront of me for the past fortnight. Montalcino Red, black pack, SE for the almond leather (curiously only available on the SE; the HSE Nimbus looks and feels like plastic IMO!), full sunroof, privacy, rear cam etc...but every time I pick upthe pen to sign the order form I feel unsure. Would hate to spent £50k+ and end up missing my D4....

Do you actually need a cage ?

Thank you so much for letting me into the Geoff. And Flack circle of trust:) will make contact.

Really depressing to learn tgat main dealers are so insistent that timing belt is a "body off job" when its now clear to me thar it isnt.

Sorry to be lazy and ask (at work so cant refer ti my D4 service book) but theyve only mentioned the timimg belt as beimg due at 7 years/84k. These other 'rear belts' mentioned on this forum are news to me. Are they something that can be done all at the same time (happy to do so it it lessens the jumber of surgical operations (!) on my D4 and even if some of the other bekts stil have lufe in them).

An earluer post mentioned doing 3 belts at the same time for £550

This afternons forum has given plemty of food for thought. One thing is clear: signing that Disco 5 order form is firmly on hold:)

Btw, attached photo suows just why Disco 4 headroom so essential for us...the cage is custom made to be the macimum that can fit through the boot opening. Thr equivalent custom cage for D5 would be 12cm lower in height

Another issue that you should be aware of is gearbox oil change.

LR say 140k miles (I believe) but the recommendation from those that know here Bow down is half that. Lots on here about that if you search.

Interesting DiscoDanny about you spending £700 a year on brakes? Seems strange had mine 3 years in Dec 17k and plenty of life in the pads and even on my old D3 manual I'm sure fronts done twice and rears 3x even discs front & back twice.at 80k before trade in .
So perhaps driving habits ?

I have a Disco 4 on a 64 plate and have done 93k miles. I don't much fancy the Disco 5 at the moment so took out the extended warranty. I thought it would only be valid for 25k miles but they checked and it is valid for unlimited miles as long as it is taken out before you pass 100k miles.

They had a look back at my history as well as I couldn't remember having any problems with the car and all I have ever had done to it are brake pads and disks and a couple of windscreen wipers. Not a single thing went wrong with it in 93k miles. That is a real credit to the engineers and designers who created it. I hope writing this doesn't tempt fate lol but I wouldn't worry too much about the high mileage aspect of things. You can sort of tell if you have a good one and I reckon it's worth hanging on to if you do. I have always had a new one after 3 years in the past but don't particularly like the D5, it doesn't seem like such a work horse or as tough.

I did 31k before my pads went. Now on 58k and waiting for the warning light to appear (though apparently, according to Robbie Bow down , the wear detectors aren't on every wheel, they put one on one and hope/assume that the others will be more or less the same Rolling Eyes) For a £50k+ car that sucks Censored

Once again, a general "thank you" to everyone who has been kind enough to offer thougts on my post. I feel foolish to have been a silent voyeur of this site for the past 6 years when clearly thee is so much wisdom out there! I guess my hesitation is that so many other LR arejus whinge-fests where you only hear about the bad and not the good Smile)

Cage - the Lintran cage is tge best £600 ever spent. When removed, no evidence at all that this is a doggy-owned (yes, i mean that - its his car!), plus he loves it, its his den and he's happy to snuggle down as im up and down the M6 london to liverpool. The "3 of us" have also done 40+ round trips through the eurotunnel as I worked in Luxembourg for several years. My disco made those journeies feel like sitting in your lounge just enjoying thr hifi Smile)

And on brake wear: i dont het it either. I def dont hammer them, and tge wear is always uneven on the rears more, which made me think there was parking brake friction or so, but a few dealers (Grange Barnet, Stratstone Notts) have looked and say nothing untoward. Am sure Flack and Geoff. might conclude otherwise.

Excellent point about the highway patrol using D4s, thet must be huge mileage and sureky they wouldnt buy a fleet that isnt up to it. True thing! Cant imaginr the D5 as a patrol car.

I have to say i do like the D5 in absolure terms and, whisper it, but i even quite like the rump and, lets say, quirky offset plate (maybe because ive alwats had a full lenght plate on my car and not the square plate)....but every time I me i see one at a dealer lot i honestly have to double check it is a D5 and not something else. I remember when I was first considering a D4 and went to a daler in Trier Germany and saw it up close in the flesh, i was awestruck by its awesome presence and bulk and muscularity, and the D5 has never stirred me that way....

Were i to proceed with my D5 order, the cost of change is £42k inc 5 year/75,000 mile service pack. I that pot of cash for D4 maintenance then, barring a total engine blow out, will be more than enough to do gold plated mainrenance. But, for ,e, its not just the maths, its the hassle of things going wrong and losing confidence.

Sigh....

@ Brian, thats what you call a Discoful of dogs!!!! My pup is utterly spolit by enjoying the vast space and the D4 has raised his expectations to impossible levels. Whenever i pop him up in another cars boot, D5 or (whipser it, xc90

) to test, he does his best to look completely miserable! Ditto when we have a Disco Sport courtesy car. King of the castle

Pic from one of the many eurotunnel crossings. Cage is big enough for ne to join himmfir a snooze

Disco4Danny, there are still a few very low milage D4's available on the LR Approved website, 66 plate Graphite with 218 miles is one of them, but it doesn't look as though there are any new Landmarks left in the UK, I must have got one of the last Very Happy Always another option for you if you don't fancy the D5 ?

Thanks B16. Yep, been through this connundrum already, was poised to trade to a delivery miles Landmark in March but then when parkedctge cars side by side realised its bonkers to pay £35k cost of change to a Yulong Whiye with ebony which is far off what id factory order when i adore mu Baltic Blue/almond combo, as id essentially just be paying for a new engine
