Unfortunatly it's not very easy to see the pump casing unless you remove the cover or at least pull it fwd, which requires removal of the aux belt, for best access.
A pain, but worth doing for peace of mind.Simon.

the motors going in on saturday to get the belt tensioner replaced and a new air compressor fitted i supose he will have more chance of seeing the pump then. is it common for the 2008 to fail as some posts say that year had the better version on

Whatever the year, IMHO if you are doing the belts, you should upgrade the oil pump.

My 08 had a newer revision fitted but still not the newest and stronger version.
Geoff. and Flack replaced mine a year ago. I now drive it without the £10k bill hanging over my head! 2008 XS Java Black

I had mine done for Piece of Mind when the big belt and service was done, got the latest FoMoCo pump from Advanced factors at a very reasonable price.... G4OC Secretary

Has anyone found the spot to drill a hole in the cover to put an endoscope in without having to strip a load of stuff? Or maybe melting a hole with a hot iron would be better as there would be no bits left and a long hot iron the shape of an alan key would be easy to reach into a very tight space. And a rubber plug could be put in to plug the hole after
Now that could be a nice little business opportunity for someone. "£50 and I'll tell you which pump is fitted"
Doesn't affect me as my pump is not the bad type but my indi has recommended changing it anyway when the belts are being done for the second time fairly soon mine is a 2006 on 280K KM so it's due it's second belt change at around 320K KM.

Firstly I've never changed the front belt so yes I don't know what I'm talking about.. but when you say bonkers... is it that the tensioner and belt are blocking all view of the pump unless they are removed? I was only suggesting it to see could it make life easier for people to check the pump.
