BMW X5 thoughts
Bigger brother currently drives a 10 year old XC90 and it's beginning to fail, he's therefore looking around at alternatives and has narrowed it down to the Disco 4 and X5
Biggest issue is that he can get a much newer X5 for the same sort of money.
I know that all of you will say 'Get the Disco'
Would really appreciate feedback from anybody that's had experience of both
But, i'm looking for any actual feedback on the X5 and how does it compare to the Disco
Looking at a 2014 ish age, there's about £5k+ difference in prices it seems
Cheers
Iggy/Ieuan

Most or all BMWs (including I assume the X5) have run-flat tyres. In the 320 I had 10 years back they were a complete abortion (tram-railing and poor ride) with no real benefit. May be worth checking ...

as usual, depends what you expect from it. If you want any real off-road ability the X5 will likely struggle.
You want to load a wardrobe in the back - the D4 probably better again.
You want family motorway barge and it maybe shifts more towards the X5 in terms of economy and probably even comfort, etc.
Had D3's and D4's and X5's (early 2000's though) and that is what would hold for my view.
However I'd take a Merc' MLK over a BMW if not going D4

I did consider the ML and the GL before the D5. I have clients with both and thought they were way better than the X5.
My only thing and it seems to be a German style, I felt the inside was dark and depressing.

If I hadn't been buying for towing and work use I would have looked at a RR sport.
I followed a client in his yesterday to do a site visit and my D3 had to work hard to keep up. The suspension bong was doing overtime. The sport seemed really composed on the road.

Thanks Chaps, he's not needing to tow, but does do a load of walking etc with his dog, so needs bags of space in the back for kit and his dog
He really likes the X5's inside feels they are better drive cars than the Disco, and lower tax and much better mpg than the Disco.
But.....he still loves the Disco
Off road for Keith would be some gravel tracks to get to some walking spots in th the Brecon Beacons Iggy/Ieuan

Why doesn't he buy an estate car, can get a 4x4 version which unlike the x5 won't get stuck, bigger in the back and far cheaper to run?Just remember:-

Does he need to carry kids? I struggled to get my three in the back of an X5 so went with the new XC90. It's still tighter in the back than the D4 was but has much more leg room.

I swapped my MY11 D4 HSE for a new BMW X5 30D M Sport in 2014 and there are pros and cons with each. Most have been covered before but here's my thoughts.
X5
Pros
fuel economy - I average 35+ and only do fairly short journeys these days (12k miles in 3 years of ownership)
more car like to drive but retains the command driving position
great iDrive control over the infotainment system (no touch screen though)
if you find one with the service package, it should be covered for another couple of years
circa £1k to extend the BMW warranty (insurance based) with recovery or about £800 without
split tailgate
Cons
needs winter tyres/wheels which means extra storage or 2 visits a year to the dealers (a pain)
reasonable load space but 2 standard internal doors only just fitted with front passenger seat as far forward and upright as it would go
no problems with runflat ride quality but even though they're Pirelli Scorpions, they're wearing faster than the D4 equivalent tyres (and no full size spare option either)
Quality control and customer service from the dealers is just as from BMW as it was from Land Rover.
I only swapped the D4 because the supplying dealer had it for 12 weeks to diagnose and fix what turned out to be a transfer box issue but left with scratched paintwork, badly fitted cabling, and an old fashioned autobox transmission shunt that I lost faith in the motor. BMW on the other hand delivered the X5 with what turned out to be weld splatter on the front, ruined the gloss black trim with degreaser twice, and sprayed the engine bay with AdBlue.
On paper, the X5 is much more suited to my needs these days but no prizes for guessing which one I'd love to still be driving instead 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT

He likes the 4x4 feel, XC70 is a possibility, but he fancies a change from Volvo
He's certainly not a spanner man, so will need pockets - And as for kids does carry his Grand children and occasional additional dogs, so space is key
I know the disco is huge, but wandering if the X5 is not too far away?
EDIT:
Just saw your feedback Bob, thanks for this will pass this and all on to him
If he's honest he wants the D4, but is worried about the need for much deeper pockets than BMWIggy/Ieuan

I know it isn't on his radar but if I were him I would have a look at the Nissan X-Trail.
I had one and it was great at everything, faultless in two years of ownership and it ticks all his boxes.

How can you say such a thing?! It isnt so long ago you bought a high viz motorbike helmet, which I beleive you must show proof of ownership of both pipe and slippers before you may purchase
My X-trail was the old shape and it was black with a spoiler so it was cool 8)
