pad wear sensor

2007 LR3 (North American), which I purchased used. I was replacing tires on the rear axle and noticed a wire hanging from the caliper. It turned out to be a disc pad wear sensor, with the head cut off and wires twisted together. It appears the previous owner replaced rear discs and pads (or had them replaced) probably because the sensor was eaten thru, but did not replace the sensor. I have purchased a new sensor. My question, do the pads have to be special (Land Rover) to receive the pad wear sensor head or will they work with any after market pads?

All aftermarket ones I have had have the cutout for the sensor.

As above. I've never bought pads from Land Rover and the pads I've fitted all accepted the sensor.
You don't need to get the sensor from Land Rover either.

Sounds like you have a project on your hands Joe!

Used to be common in the UK years back for mechanics to cut off the wires on cars when they performed services!

Pulled my rear wheel end again. Sure enough the sensor was cut off twisted together, soldered and heat shrinked. I cut the end off and split the wires and verified that I get a pad wear sensor error\fault. I replaced it with my new sensor. Quite easy on the rear, the clip was a little tricky until you follow the wire all the way back and it is easy to see the connector from the rear of the vehicle. I did not have good reference material to figure out where to actually put the sensor head, but it seems that there is a hole accessible via the larger opening in the caliper. I placed it in there and pushed quite hard...the 90 degree turn on the sensor does not quite sit flush with the caliper body, but I figure that is OK. The brakebible had the best picture I could find. I ended up pulling the front (diagonal) wheel to see if I could get a view how it was installed there. Unfortunately it was the same as rear (sensor cut off twisted, soldered and heat shrunk). I ordered a new sensor for that < $10 online.
