I think I've answered my question with the help of Dean (Hardware17)
Ran a jump lead earth cable from the battery to ground & it starts!!
Now to find where the loose earth is deep inside!

the connection at the inner wing, by the battery has been known to be loose

Good thinking thanks but it wasn't the problem - here it is/was, deep in the engine bay. GOK why it broke.
