Discovery 3 Wont Start (fitted a new battery) |
|
Hi,
I was driving my d3 the other day and all of a sudden all the warning lights came on the dash, so i pulled over to the hard shoulder and switched the d3 off. I then was unable to start the d3. I managed to get hold of a new battery and installed it on the hard shoulder. The d3 started up fine! I then drove the vehicle about 20mins stopped at the destination then about 20min later tried to start again and no luck. The battery was flat! tried to jump start the d3 with a landrover defender and was unable to do so, ignition would come on and then just a click and week starting sound, the jump leads got too hot to continue so was towed back to my address.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this issue? or should i get a can of petrol and end it now!hehe
Thanks

Possibly the Alternator is shot , there are many posts on the subject if you search flat battery.

I would point towards alternator too but I'm no expert! Have you tried searching the forum for anything similar?

Very power hungry vehicles, with no charge it would drain very quickly especially if the alternator has a short as well

disconnect the battery before it's knackered too or the car catches fire!

One problem with the alternators on Discoveries is that they can short out, and drain a new battery in minutes. I would disconnect your new battery, fully recharge it. Then swap the alternator before trying again.

The advice here is sound but because you've failed to fill in your profile, it's hard to know which Discovery you have as there are many variants, therefore impossible to help directly.
Presuming you have a diesel V6, you will no doubt find this thread of interest: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic158391.html but be warned, failure to fit a Denso and you'll be right back where you started. Mods:

Hi guys.
Just found myself in the same spot. Flat battery (which was 7 yrs old) but could be jump started & the voltmeter showed the alternator was charging (14.4v).
However, a new replacement battery wouldn't start the vehicle.
So, if it is the alternator, how do I bypass it to get the vehicle started & prove the diagnosis/get to the garage?
Thanks!! Richard
