Auto Gearbox oil change interval?

I have just brought a 13 year old Auto with 47K miles on it.

I am planning on towing a 2 tonne caravan up and down the hills of North Devon in a months time.

Previously the same caravan has "overheated" my TD5 Auto gearbox - but the light allways went off on the down hills! and this was after a oil and filter change!

So I would like to know if I should be worried about 13 year old oil in my box, or should i forget the age and change it on mileage?

Ps its not leaking oild from anywhere right now

Change it now!

You just have to read the threads on torque converters and gearbox woes, its a no brainer.

Per ZF themselves

https://www.zf.com/corporate/en_de/afterma...sions.html

Under normal conditions, the oil lasts a vehicle's entire life cycle, but it can age prematurely in case of excessive loads – such as from frequent use of trailers or quick, sporty driving. An oil change should therefore be recommended after 80,000 to 120,000 kilometers or eight years.

That's every 49,000- 75,000 miles.

I plan on changing mine every 35,000 on the safe side.

Mine was double flushed at 82k and the TC still needed changed at 142k. And what is this sporty driving ZF speak of? Whistle Whistle Laughing

I would get the other transmission oils changed as well , Transfer box & Diffs. They don't hold a lot and I was appalled at the state of the oil in mine after 8 yrs.

This looks like the tool for the job, I should be able to replicate the mega flush with this?

Has anyone used this on a D3- do any of the adapters fit?

Or is there another one that is recommended?

Hi Dean

That one looks bigger, but it is just for filling the gearbox underneath

The smaller one comes with a set of adapters that might fit the oil cooler pipes as in the mega flush method.

One of these is much cheaper and perfectly up to the job of gearbox flushing:

http://www.screwfix.com/p/green-pressure-s...GwodjhALog

Also some hose and a connector 12mm(I think - it was a while ago):

And the correct oil:
