Manual gear box replacement and what else? Advice needed |
|
My 06 D3 needs a new (manual) gearbox at 88k miles. Thankfully I have warranty cover so Jake Wrights will be fitting a recon box.
As the gearbox is coming out anyway, seems to me an opportunity to replace anything else likely to need doing before too long, such as the clutch?
Looking at a few threads on here talk of various sensors, torque converter, dual mass flywheel etc. seems sundry bits of the transmission might benefit from preventative maintenance?
I had a 13 reg FL2 that needed a new clutch & flywheel at 70k miles, so those bits seem the most likely - does anyone do a solid flywheel for the D3?
Any thoughts / advice appreciated?

It's fairly unusual for a manual box to fail at such a low mileage. What are the symptoms? If it's just a case of not being able to select reverse, it may be that you just need a detent circlip. Various threads on that subject.
I only mention this because when my circlip broke Land Rover said I needed a new box.

The symptoms consist of a howling noise which three qualified mechanics (two of which were my mates as passengers on the way to the pub, third being the chap at Jake Wright) say is the gearbox, probably the output side of things. It's rapidly become intrusive.
Gear selection seems ok albeit perhaps not always perfect going into first.
Whatever it is it needs fixing so assuming it is the gearbox I plan on getting the clutch/flywheel done plus anything else it's sensible to replace at the time. If it turns out to be something completely different (it might be the transfer box possibly) then I'll leave the clutch for later.

Try it in low range, see if that makes a difference
