New Squealing noise - Found It - crossover pipe no bracket
So I have a new noise today. Sounds a bit like the beginning of a belt squeal but I only replaced the front belt and tensioners a few weeks back. The squeal builds in volume (pitch is pretty constant) peaks at about 2k rpm then becomes almost inaudible by the time it hits 3k due to engine noise, so It's not that loud (more so with window open). It only happens with the engine under load and nothing in neutral even when the car is freewheeling. Noise goes if you back off throttle. Happened again on the journey home (8 miles) then appear to have disappeared on a short journey 5 minutes later (engine now fully warm).
Any thoughts on what it may be or how I can diagnose?

Same again this morning. With the window open sounds like it's coming anywhere from the engine to the transfer box. Does the same in low or high. So I'm thinking either a split hose, transfer box, front prop?
Anything else to add in it discount would be appreciated, along with any diagnosis tips! Definitely get better when the engine warms.

Bet you a coffee it not the belt but a split intercooler hose?
Long fat hose is the favourite, doddle to change

Any black smoke & loss of power ? I had all these symptoms with the split top hose ,Tried to temporarily fix the split with gaffer tape. When I pulled away it made a sound like a wailing banshee ,Easy job to do

No obvious smoke or power loss. I'll get it swapped out this weekend and report back. Fingers crossed it's nothing more serious. I can't understand why it eases up (gets quieter) after the engine warms up.

Have you considered exhaust at all, had a squeaky manifold on a TD5 a few years back but as it got hotter it expanded and stopped, always there when cold though
Just an idea, check for soot around the manifolds and crossover pipe

Thanks Sniffer I'll have a look underneath when I get a chance. Would a leak in the exhaust make a noise whether under load or not? Mine only occurs when the car is moving being throttled.

Noise is better than it was earlier in the week for no apparent reason, still there though.
Replaced the top intercooler hose, problem remains.
Exhaust next, but it'll have to wait until I'm next underneath. Just not sure why an exhaust leak would squeal when the engine is under load, is the pressure greater?

I had the same on a Td5. Sounded more like a budgie under the bonnet than a squeak, but definitely caused by a warped exhaust manifold.D1 300Tdi - gone
D2 Td5 ES (Alive remapped...mmm) - sadly gone
D4 2012 SDV6 XS - Stolen

FOUND IT
Found it - It is my crossover pipe
Anybody had this done by a skinny armed recommended mechanic without body off / gearbox out; within 50 miles of north Essex?

If you replace it can I buy your old one ? the bracket is missing on mine and it's probably gone already, I want to use an old one to make a modified one and swap rather than take mine off to modify.Jarrod

Thank Andy, spoke to him this morning
Booked in for a body off transplant in about 10 days (they're busy boys!)
Anybody got any ideas if it will last that long? It's been noticeable for about a week without any significant change in pitch or volume.
