The LR logic of the off-set numberplate

All the Discovery models had off-setumber plates and the stepped roof line. I think this is continued to separate the Disco models from the RangeRover cars.

To defend my theory all true discos had hi and low range. Freelander s a Freelander, not a Disco.

This Disco Sport may be a good car in its own right, but it's no Freelander 3! The cars may share the same platform, but the design intent is completely different.

The OP may have a point about the offset plate though; with it now being merely cosmetic (and requiring no complex and expensive engineering to fit) and with the Disco Sport and new Disco otherwise being so similar to look at, I can see a version of the offset plate making it onto the DS at the next facelift.

I assume it's like the funny shape rear glass on the d3/4, a styling nod to discoverys past.

To be fair, on the 3/4, it not only creates a much stronger visual link with Discoveries past but, in addition, it remains highly credible by serving at least two very practical purposes too Thumbs Up

Dunno, there was me thinking LR had employed the designer that was responsible for Alphas offset front number plate.

Simply, it just looks odd, but it's not a game changer. You drive the car from the inside, so you don't see it unless your that vain that you sit and look at it in your driveway or when you park up at the supermarket, so why worry. Thumbs Up

'so you don't see it unless your that vain that you sit and look at it in your driveway or when you park up at the supermarket, so why worry'

So nobody on here does that, ever Laughing

(but I also remember the D3 being described as a Transit Van when it first came out Laughing - I saw my first D5 up close and personal this week - looked fine to me - rear plate looked OK to me)

Guilty! I bought a hideous new Citroen C5 once Embarassed

I bought it on the strengths of its brilliant predecessor, the XM, which they'd just stopped making at the time Big Cry I won't be making that mistake again! Rolling Eyes

If a car did everything you wanted it to do but was ugly, would you go and buy something prettier but that didn't do what you wanted it to do?

Looks are secondary, at best. You don't look at it when driving and who cares what other people think?

Exactly, I have bought a D5 as it is more suited to my needs than a RRS2 after owning 2 RRS1's previously.

I am not oversold on the rear, but I am getting used to it. It certainly did not put me off buying one.

The offset numberplate on disco 1 and 2 was because of the spare wheel.
probably it is just a cosmetic remaining on the 3, 4 and 5.

It did also allow for the diagonal split in the rear tailgate, which gave us the split depth lower door and the extra deep window on the opposite side.
