There's a very good three part blog of the EU preparations for Brexit (and UK GOV lack of prep), leading up to this weekend's rEU27 summit in Brussels:

Again, they're links to the FT, so you might bump into the paywall. If you do, perhaps you could register for a free trial subscription.

This speech by Michel Barnier explains his thinking as he plans the EU Brexit negotiation. It covers topics such as the rights of citizens, the financial settlement, etc. It's not very long and well worth the 10 minutes required to read it.

What would Junckers remember, he was probably pi**ed when he arrived and comatose when he left.

From the Barnier speech linked above.

A rather more reasoned stance,

The no-deal scenario is not our scenario.
We want a deal. We want to succeed by reaching a deal.
Succeed with the British, not against them.

This though;

We are ambitious in the area of defence.
On this point, the United Kingdom has always played an active and important role in NATO, with numerous European countries, but also in a number of European Union initiatives and operations linked to the Common Security and Defence Policy.
In the 27's work on their own defence, based on proposals by Federica Mogherini and the Commission, we should keep open the possibility of bilateral cooperation with the United Kingdom.
We should not haggle with the security of our fellow citizens in trade discussions.
In these negotiations, there should be no trade-off between security and commercial interests.

Let me rephrase that without the weasel words.

As ever, we in continental Europe will look to the UK to bolster our defences, to continue to spend more on defence than any of us do, to meet the 2% of GDP commitment to NATO and, if need be, for its troops to die for us. But let us not consider this when we shaft the UK on a trade deal

@comedyharvey

Even in his home state of Luxembourg Juncker has a reputation for liking his wine. Many Luxembourgers dislike him but few take him for a fool. The EU might have hoped for a better president of its Commission but he is competent nonetheless, and succesfully chaired the Eurogroup of finance ministers from 2005 to 2013.

As to Britain's potential for contributing to European defence, I hesitate to offer a comment on such a complex matter beyond saying (i) British and European security interests will certainly not be served by a British withdrawal because it and the EU fail to reach a settlement on Brexit and (ii) it's a long time since I served in the Army but I still know enough to say that our security contribution, welcome though it is, can be replaced if it must be.

Yes, but they won't replace our contribution, they will still expect the UK to take up their slack. They don't, with the exceptions of the UK and three smaller economies, Poland, Estonia and Greece, even meet the 2% of GDP defending spend commitment to NATO. Germany spends 1.2%, Italy and Spain around 1%. That will not change for a very long time, if ever.

But my point is this;

If we, historically, had failed to meet our commitment and our defence largely depended on spending by the EU then I can guarantee that this would not have been removed from the settlement equation. They'd be talking about £60 billion plus an extra several billion to pay for this defence 'deficit'.

They conveniently omit it because the net balance is in our favour.

We should be arguing for a credit.

Merely a half competent snake if this report is true

@comedyharvey, that Telegraph report is not true.

Here's a discussion on Twitter about the leak:

David Allen Green is a lawyer and guest writer for the FT. Jeremy Cliffe is the head of The Economist's Berlin bureau. Click through to Jeremy's thread and read that first.

I'll take your word for it, I don't do Twitter, I've got better things to do than trawl through endless, largely pointless, one liners.

So, are you saying that Junckers went to Downing Steet completely unaware of the discussions May had with Tusk three week earlier?
