Does that stop dust and sand too if you're driving say in Deserts?

Plus at what point does the D5 start to float? No point in saying it can wade up to 900mm if it will float off downstream at 600mm. Whistle

It says (in the article) that whilst the car can theoretically wade up to a metre depth the rear end will start to float at 900mm, hence the limitation (unless full with 7 peeps)

I guess it will separate dust and sand etc as they will also drop out of entrainment as the air flows through the bonnet skins. However, under severe conditions there is the possibility that the void may become blocked?

Not sure that this is new tech - does the chap/engineer not say that it is also in the FFRR and RRS?

I was aware they had first implemented it on the FFRR RRS ..but someone asked on here somewhere about fitting a RAI to the D5 and I thought this a good explanation Smile

What happens when the water is over the top of the bonnet as is common is some areas of my country = dead engine $$$$$$.

Sorry needs a snorkle and I am sure one will be designed that bypasses all that convoluted intake system and connects direct to the airfilter. I would suggest that the bonnet sections will be bypassed and a hole cut in the outer guard with the snorkle external to the outer guard like most other snorkles.

If the water is over the top of the bonnet in your country you, my friend , need a boat NOT a car.

Nifty explanation in the video however the air chamber didn't appear to be well sealed at the top of the bonnet near the windscreen....

The top two pics are typical of what you can expect in the top end of Aust - particularly Cape York - noting the aim is to get a bit of a bow wave going over the top of the bonnet as it keeps water out of the engine bay - in that situation the standard D5 will be sucking water even if the depth is less than 900mm.

That vid in the first post seems to be talking about rain etc not fording.

There was a video on 5th Gear a while ago when VBS put a FFRR into some very very deep water that came up well over the bonnet and it did not fail or flood the engine
