Sounds like a challenge for AndrewS, take the D5 through Strata Florida in the same flood conditions as he took his D3.

I think this is the same principle that's used on Jetskis and the like? They can completely submerge for a period of time, and the plenum volume design allows for the engine to keep going.
I know it has a finite amount of time before it drowns, but as VBH proved, it's enough to get you through.
If you plan on standing in water over the bonnet for extended periods, then yes you will have an issue, but I reckon thats where the 900mm figure comes from.
