D5 - Petrol or Diesel Engine ? |

Given all the recent developments about diesel engines, if you were considering buying a new D5 would you go for the TD6 Diesel or the Si6 Petrol engine ?
Annual mileage is around 3,000 mostly towing a caravan. Once bought, it would be for the long term ie 10 years. The car is mainly used for towing, so tends to sit unused between caravan trips every couple of weeks.
Tried to add a poll but didn't work, could a moderator add one for me please ?

On that low a mileage I'd go petrol then you don't have to worry about DPF clogging

Back in 2009 I bought a MY10 RRS to pull a new Elddis Twin Axle and had about £65k sitting on the drive most of the time while I drove SWMBOs FL1
I said I'd keep them 10 years and I looked at the cost of a nice motorhome sitting on the drive/cycling when pitched or the RRS for Towing/driving while pitched/Eating out/Sunday drives and figured it was best option as we took 12 weeks a year holiday back then 8)
Unfortunately the RRS was a lemon, got damaged by dealer 3rd service and the van leaked after 3 years so I started again with a MY13 RRS and another new van and this time ended up with £78k standing on the drive although I recouped some of the cost from the previous outfit and I sold SWMBOs FL1 so we used the RRS more
Everything was perfect for a couple of years of my 10 year plan but then swmbo decided she hated vanning and saw a house she loved so both had to go - women

I think I would employ someone to deliver my caravan for me and arrive in a Ferrari.
But I would buy a petrol version , but possibly a 5.0sc FFRR. Andy.

Hopefully penalties for having a diesel will be progressive rather than all encompassing so a Euro6 engine should be 'safe' for a few years yet....even if there were to be a penalty you have to weigh that up against fuel cost differentials. That said, if they had a wider range of petrols then I would be tempted 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

My concern is that the government will decide that the best way to tackle the diesel issue is by increasing the duty on diesel fuel in future budgets and within a couple of years the price of diesel will skyrocket, thereby making it cheaper to run a petrol D5.

Go for the vehicle which best suits your needs - trying to base a decision on future government policy is a gamble to put it mildly. Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

Well that is a fair possibility though the talk in the smoke , where the issue is perhaps the most focused at the mo, seems to be upon the age of the vehicle. That's what I 'm concerned about, if they decide to launch an all out war against diesel, does it make sense to buy one now, when for an extra £1500, you can get the petrol version. If diesel engines are now going to be stigmatised, that would have a dramatic effect on the future value of the vehicle. As I only do 3k a year it's not just about the cost of the fuel it's about the whole experience of buying a new diesel car, when a petrol version is available.
DG, any chance of adding a poll to this, as I would really like to see how other forum members would decide given the choice.
