retracting rear seat belts query

Hi all
Just wanting to fit rear seat belts to my 2006 Disco 3 tdv 6 s manual. they were fitted before but have been cut as it was converted to a commercial, now converting back.

I have sourced the belts but on removing the various trim parts & bolting in the spool & mounting on to the B pillar bolt then clipping in the seat belt the belt retracts & won't pull back out!

It keeps taking more & more belt off me but won't allow me to pull it out again.

One of the belts I bought used had a label which said do not remove the knot in the belt until you have fitted the whole thing which is impossible if you want to thread the belt through the B pillar so the only thing that makes any sense to me is to remove the knot hold on to the belt & then thread it, but as said it just want's to retract & not come back out.

It would make sense to me if it had to be in a certain position ie facing upwards as though it was in situ to pull back out again, but won't budge.

Not sure if I explained it well enough to make sense but bit stuck now.

Any help would be appreciated looked around on the forum but can't find anything so be gentle.
Thanks
John

The reel needs to be exactly in its fitted attitude for the belt to pull out, slightest movement from that will make it lock up.

Hi L319
Thanks for your reply
Went back to the car & picked up the belt assembly again & it just pulled straight out! Doh

I understand how it works now it, looked it up on youtube & a guy had taken one to bits showing a small ball bearing which when perfectly level allows the belt to be let out & in so as you say its critical that the belt reel is mounted at the right angle in the car,

It did not help matters when I was offering it up to the B pillar & the car was also on a slope with no bolt in.

again thanks for your help.

Just need to work out now why the belt does not retract all the way back in there is now about 12" of the belt just laying down the seat ready to get trapped in the door when you shut it.

any thoughts on that would be well received

John

Hi
My rear belts are very weak and don't retract fully unless helped.

Additional info on rear belts in a late disco (3 anyway), in order to retain non Isofix car seats the LR rear belts (5) will if pulled out to the max length then only return on a ratchet and not pull out again until they have been completely put back. Non LR D3 (D4?) won't do that?
