Can't understand under what circumstances the block would be line-bored . Thought the way to recondition the bottom end was to grind the crankshaft and fit oversize shells! If the block was line-board then the shell would be oversize on the O/D and size on the I/D to accommodate a standard size crankshaft. Can this e done?

Some advice from you guys - Engine failure
Hi guys
Well as with some of you other fine people on here....... my D3 appears to have a catastrophic engine failure and exactly what is unknown at this time. 2006 D3 120k miles on the clock and been very well looked after since I've owned her for the last 8 years. No major issues throughout her life.
My indie reckons bent rod, spun big ends just to start. He says the turbo also has oil on it so probably need a new turbo too.
No indication anything was happening until going uphill on the M3 at about 60mph not towing when the large clunking noise started inside the engine.
Want to try and get her fixed coz love the car and still worth too much to just get rid off.
Been looking around for either a recon engine of used engine but in a dilemma what to do.
Had a quote from Dieselenginesrus based in Barking for supply and fitted recon engine for £3500. Has anyone used this company before?
I live near West Byfleet in Surrey so don't want to travel as far as Scotland if you know what I mean.
Diesel Engine R Us Ltd was incorporated only a few months ago - 19th May 2016, and the only director is Mr Khairur Rahman, appointed 1st July 2016.
Their website claims:-
Quote:
We are the most trusted engine replacement service in the UK, with 15 years of experience we have thousands of satisfied customers on our credit.
I find that difficult to credit if they have only been trading for 7 or 8 months.
They also say:-
Quote:
Diesel Engine R Us is the name you can trust for brilliant quality engines, awesome customer service. We are one of the most reliable engine replacement & repair services provider in London. Our outclass customer service and industry leading Garage facilities make us specialists in supplying quality engines for all types of vehicles, local or imported. We offer UK wide delivery and fittings are available with massive discounts and special offers. Our dedicated and qualified engine experts are available all the time to solve your engine issues.
I feel that all of the above may well be hyperbole; and certainly I wouldn't use them without more details & evidence regarding their 15 years of experience and thousands of satisfied customers.

new engine
As my mileage heads North this will be my destiny!
Brand new engine from Craddock's for £5600 approx on Ebay
Wondered how on earth some of the special deals for supply and fit can be properly done for £3500? If your on a budget to fix your pride and joy it could indeed be a rotten place to be.
As the Universe dictates 'It's all in the Numbers' and thank you Disco_Mikey for the heads up.

FYI notch ID method is from the PSA part of the design which has gone on for donkeys years! And I've not heard of a PSA engine that can't have a skimmed head. Usual not scare inherit per Janice or laziness to not help show how to id which gasket fits what skim level... or even just their thicknesses would help reallyFFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner
Test piloted a new D4 XS SDV6.. Gone and being forgotten i hope!!

Territory engines are about 4.5k Aussie or about 3k GBP. Bought one recently with 15k miles. Territory's are pretty popular so there is probably one smashed one for each of us down here. Yes a bit of money to be made. Changes the economics a bit in terms of ditching the car or not ... particularly if you love your wheels other than a dead engine. On the flip side it's not all plain sailing down here ... finding a mechanic that can do it reliably at a reasonable price is the challenge.
Edit ... it's nearly a days work to switch the parts

Currently have a D3 in with a cylinder head off. Picked it up from the engineering place after being skimmed and got chatting about a recon 2.7 they are repairing for another customer
I don't know the whole story, but it had been supplied by an engine reconditioning company, and apparently the crank was tight to
The cost of rectification for parts and labour was over £8,000, and that didn't include removal or refit of the engine to the car
Had always wondered what you get for your £3k supply and fit engine
An engine from JLR is only about 6k plus vat with a 2 year warranty
