Too scared to tune
Having finally acquired myself a D4 I'd always imagined taking it to somewhere like Alive or BAS to get a few more HP, maybe MPG and driveability . However just as I was about to book an appointment I starting noticing all the sdv6 failure threads popping up . Am I right in thinking that any tuning would put unwanted stress on the engine and therefore increase my chances of having the dreaded failure, or am I worrying too much and should just do it ?

I don't think anyone on the forum fully understands the failure mode(s) enough to comment. But in general yes, increased torque will put more pressure on the crank and the bearings. If the failure mode is precipitated by degraded oil or oil supply then the increase in torque will probably make little difference as the failure is on its way. If the failure is down to a design strength issue then increased torque will bring an increased failure rate. If the flaw is down to manufacture or assembly then a failure will probably occur anyway.
The RRS2 has effectively the same engine and runs at higher power and torque levels. It too has suffered crank failures but the rate does not appear to be any higher than the D4, even though they are probably driven more enthusiastically. This would suggest the failure may be decoupled from power and torque. There also seems to be a correlation in failure rate and oil servicing that is more towards the upper limit; but this could just be unmasking of the latent fault at an earlier stage.
On a more wider scale there have been quite a few failures of otherwise established designs from many different diesel manufacturers following the inclusion of a DPF in the design. Some have changed the oil specification in an effort to restore some of the oil properties when diluted by unburnt diesel.
It is an interesting situation that I do not fully understand. There are one or two on the forum that have a better insight but are prohibited from commenting.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

I can only agree Mike and in this case it's the only additional mitigation that owners can do - my oil never goes beyond 6k and is usually changed by 5k.
Whilst I cannot stop dealers from using C1 grade oil at my annual service I have no hesitation in using C2 or C3 when I do my 6th month oil change. I also check my oil pressure but not sure if doing so will help or alert me to anything untoward in this case.

I would not use a rolling road if i were you what good will it do to redline your car under load of rollers as under normal driving it will never rev as high.

Do you not think rolling roads are an important part of tuning then ?

No not for normal road going cars as the settings that go in to your ecu will be the same as thousands of other discoverys which have been well tried and tested just make sure you go with a recognised tuner.

I just have a general interest in that type of thing and would like to be able to see the changes in the power and torque on the screen. Just curiosity mainly 8)
