Thanks JMack, that sounds....eye watering!
As you've done this procedure yourself, do I need to push the splined shaft across? By pushing the end, having gained access the blanking plate with the Allen screw on the opposite side of the tow bar to the (now absent) lock? And hammer the retaining pin at the same time?
That sounds like a job for someone with 3 hands. Maybe I need to recruit Mrs home lover. But that normally ends badly....

Honestly, if it is that stuck on there you clearly rarely if ever remove it. Leave it on there and get a fixed towbar for the replacement vehicle. Much better, stronger and safer.

Noted. Thanks all. Disco 3 gone now (with tow bar still attached). Lesson learnt.

Tow bar stuck / jammed
I picked up a second hand tow bar from a breakers and they had fitted new keys but it did not work correctly so I took it apart and I can see why people are saying theirs has got jammed . . . . .
My problem was that the pin would not go all the way down and the problem was a small hammer mark on the outside that had squashed the hole through the bulk of the forging. I had to ream the hole with an 18mm reamer to make it retract correctly.
If you take it fully apart watch out for the ball tensioned by a spring - if you are lucky you will see it fly past your ear when you least expect it !
When re-assembling squash the springs and get it to the retracted position then fit it to the vehicle before adding the locking mechanism – that way you can see what needs to align with what.
Now I know why the workings of the lock is a secret as it not secure - so I will be keeping it in the boot.

Take your car to Blue Water Shopping Centre.
Leave it parked up for 5 minutes. It'll be off when you return.
