Some more reasons, small things but they all add up.
Rear spoiler designed to stop you constantly having to clean the back.
Electric power steering (one less pulley/belt) aids fuel consumption.
No massive body off service to worry about.
Automatic lowering of car when exiting (I always forget till I've switched off)
Phone apps that can tell you car status, report theft, check cars locked lights off & more. (I'm not having the full seat folding but again it's a choice)
Wet storage "cupboard" in boot.
Activity Key ideal for me when dog walking & over night fishing.
LED headlights which feature five modes to suit different driving situations; Country, Town, Motorway, Alternative Country (for low visibility).Peter
The D3/4 looks dated? Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't but who cares!? I think there are few things I care about less.

The alternator control software monitors engine load, and will try only to charge the battery when on the over-run, coasting or when the engine is under low load.
Obviously if the battery is seriously depleted, it will charge in any case...
New gearbox & TC, 3 x front wheel bearings, belts changed, new oil pump, new battery, new rear prop, new front prop, new front diff, front arb refurbed, front cv boot kit, egr blank and BAS software patch, full rear suspension / drivelive rebuild, new front arms, LED trailer light fix, split charge.
Never had a 107, 90 or 127, but have had most of the rest!

But got to say the D5 and its 'modern' styling is really starting to grow on me.
Sadly just being semi retired I can't afford one (having got rid of the D4 for a FL2).
But for a wee while I've been thinking of changing back up to a D4.
However as a new D5 is out of the question, I'm now contemplating its little brother, the DS.
So it's a question of, (if I do change) do I go for the older styled but much loved D4, or the more modern look of the DS and 'rufty tufty' it up a bit. I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Electric power steering is fitted for a very good reason:
During the laboratory conditions of the fuel consumption and CO2 tests, the steering is not used. Unlike hydraulic systems, electric steering puts no load on the engine when not in use. Consequently, mpg and CO2 figures will be that bit lower under laboratory test conditions.

If you look at anything for long enough, familiarity will create acceptance. I seem to remember from my biology that it's known as "accommodation".
It even works with the hideously ugly, For example, If you try looking at this one frequently for the next few weeks, it may even start to grow on you as well:

Of course, but the power comes from the engine one way or another, and the work done is the same, so only efficiency savings apply, which will be no more than negligible. I'm sure you might well get 5% under laboratory conditions, between the worst and best case systems, in a small hatchback, when brand new, if you drive mostly on the motorway, yes. In a Disco, you certainly won't be writing home about the savings. After all, the total improvement in fuel consumption from D4 to D5 as quoted is only 6.8% from the start...

I disagree. I expect the bigger market does look at fuel consumption. Maybe not the actual number itself, but at least the comparison between rivals. Don't forget, this forum, especially its active population, could be classed as enthusiasts of LR and discos but there is a massive slice of the SUV market with no brand loyalty and very different "desires" from their vehicle - including features others class as gimmicks and some fuel economy (which we enthusiasts know to be rubbish). LR cant afford to ignore this massive market if they want to survive. Im sure there are many more D3's and D4's used on urban school runs than there are used day and daily to tow and go offroad. LR probably hope to expand into this market further.
