Coolant Loss
Hi, I'm having problems with my coolant level on my D3 08. I've searched this on other sites but can't find any definitive answers as I have similar but also additional symptoms.
My problem is I'm losing coolant as indicated on dash + level indication on bottle but can't find an external leak.
Thought maybe it was the EGR cooler but I'm not getting any white smoke as mentioned by others. If this was to fail does coolant enter the combustion chambers & have the potential of engine failure?
When I remove the expansion bottle cap the system is under pressure & the bottle refills aerated coolant but with some loss of coolant.
I have no visible signs that the head-gasket has blown i.e. Mayo under cap.
Someone did mention a transmission cooler at work but can't find any info on this & symptoms if failed (transmission works OK).
Temp gauge indicating OK. Have noticed when start car getting bubbles through the top hose into bottle. Once up to temp have loosened the vent plug to release air. Again not sure how this bottle works as seems to have a couple of chambers ( why can't it be simple like my defender & most other cars).
I understand I have asked a lot of questions that have been answered in various other threads but I don't think it's the float within the bottle (as I'm loosing coolant) can't find an external leak & no white smoke.
Hopefully with the vast knowledge on this site someone will point me in the right direction prior to giving
a garage a lot of money.

I would like to use this thread, as I have coolant loss as well. Tank was changed already. Loss is real.
So far there are some explanations
1. Distributor in the middle in the V
2. Thermostat
3. EGR cooler. If these leak, how do you notice it or where is the crack or leak.

there are couple of things you an do. get an after market coolant cap, drill a hole and fit a tyre valve. with a hand pump (one with gage usually sold at bicycle stores) put same air in to the system 1 - 1.2 bar. this is how you pressurize the system and watch for leakages. at this pressure you will have a small get of water so it will be visible.
Second check is to see the coolant cap, is the sealant rubber ok? does it makes the click sound when locked.
third and most difficult, loss of coolant from the egr coolants. Start the car, go under (remove the seal) and observe with a torch for any loss of coolant. alternative when car is relative warm put your hand on the under side of the egr coolant and check for green markings.

mine was leaking from the water pump - only when I shone a led torch in there could you see the occasional sparkle of tiny droplets - there was no leak stain...2006 TDV6 HSE Wrapped Matt Black STOLEN NOT RECOVERED

It was the distributor between the banks. Had a crack.
I did it myself and enjoyed it. Massive oil mud in the intake system, all coming from EGR.

Sounds like what happened to anglefire's in Andorra last year. Was interesting, to say the least, as happened 8,000ft up a mountain in the middle of a thunder storm. I have a vid clip, if af's OK with that.
All good DelMark.

Two comments:
O rings are included within the the new distributor, no need to buy them separately
I asked myself if the o ring of the cooler, visible a little behind, should be changed.
But there is no separate part, so I left (or let??) it in place.

At that was when the weather was quite good! It thundered, lightening, hail and snow during the double recovery back down the hill
Lost 8ltrs of water when it split. Normally when they go, it's just a small leak that you can't pin down.
But well worth a check as it's simple to do and you should see a tell tale. Mark.

At the end, I will deal with this!!!!
I have changed this plastic coolant distributor, now for the third time, because LR delivered corrupt ones, still not sure if this one is ok.
Secondly, I changed precautionarily the thermostat.
Thirdly, I am changing the left side EGR cooler right now. It was leaking, the EGR valve was wet and the coolant drops into the turbo, therefore I had smoke visible

A few weeks ago I too was loosing a small amount of coolant. I had a chat to a local LR specialist and they told me that the D3's are becoming of the age where the hoses are starting fail and become porous Sure enough, it turned out to be the EGR cooler hose. I already had the EGR blanked off, so it was a fairly easy job for them to bypass the EGR all together with a new piece of hose (apparently, to replace the EGR hose with an original meant removing a fair bit from the front end / engine bay to get access?).2016 LR4 SDV6 HSE

I would be interested to know how they did this?
And it's your engine temperature gauge still reading the same as before ?

I'm not too sure how they did it, exactly but they did comment that it was still quite tight to get the hose in there. I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can see where they've connected the plumbing.
No change to the operating temperature observed, and I've just got back from a 900km trip.2016 LR4 SDV6 HSE
