So what's the story with these engines then? I thought it wasn't possible to fix these with a snapped crank and a new engine is required?
Or is it you need a new bottom end and can use the rest? If so, why does no one generally do this and just slap either a brand new unit in, or a second hand unit? Does it cost more to rebuild etc?
Would be good if you could rebuild these for a reasonable cost!

+1 i thought they were not worth anything when a crank went and it was far to expensive to rebuild and that was even if you could source the part's Discovery 3 se gone

Ah I see.
So how does that compare in cost? What would a short engine cost? And how much labour to build up?

Have we decided on the best preventative measures?
My bill when LR fitted a replacement in mine, 10,000 miles ago was £10,800. LR paid most, warranty the rest but I can't see them being willing to do it again if it happens in the future.

Thr crank failure looked like a casting fault? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Geoff TDV8 would of been an option if I couldn't get hold of a new short motor they ended up pulling one back from Europe in the end bit of a shortage at the moment

No not had chance yet it's all nuts and bolts whether it's 1950 or 2016

I don't think there is a preventative measure for this issue to be honest I have my assumptions from what I can see

To sort of answer your question it's as beanie said really I didn't buy a long motor as it's 9-10k +vat a short motor is around 4.5k and another 1k to rebuild both heads using LR parts it could be done cheaper with non genuine parts but as it's a new block I wanted it all genuine. So buy doing the heads myself I save 4-5k but it's a lot of work,so if you wanted to pay someone to do this it wouldn't be cost effective really you'd be better buying the long motor personally Wanted D4s non runners pm for competitive price.

Cheers. I thought the labour cost of doing it would outweigh the cost of it

Out of intensive care
So another disco has been saved she's out of intensive care and in recovery all seems good so far apart from the float in the header tank has given up waiting for me to finish this and given me a lovely warning on the dash, but a nice easy fix so will take that
Give her a polish up today and a little drive around the industrial estate and I must admit it's very nice inside a D4 HSE I've only ever seen them driving past me as I look on with envy how the other half live
I will post up some pics I took along the rebuild journey, there's not much as time was limited to mainly Saturdays and I ended up getting carried away working on it and forgetting to take pics ideally I wanted to do a video but it didn't happen maybe on the next one.
So a little recap
D4 TDV6 3.0l with a snapped crankshaft.
A brand new short motor from L/R
Heads fully rebuilt
Second turbo oil drain mod carried out
Complete gasket set
Timing belt kits
Water pump
Glow plugs
All fluids inc transmission
Things left to do for now.
Needs a new rear prop
O/s track rod end
So what next do I become a D4 member or stay with the D3 or sale both

Haha it would be nice but think it's a bit toooo posh for me but will see,I need to get some milage on the new engine, make sure everything's ok before I can do anything, trouble is that means I've got to drive it and you know what's going to happen as it's already tugging on my heart strings Wanted D4s non runners pm for competitive price.

Fair play that's a hell of nice job you've done there ! I know it's off topic but could anyone give me an idea of how high to the roof line the body has to be lifted to give clearance to roll the chassis out from under it ? My workshop is plenty big enough but not overly high and before I invest in a second hand 2 post ramp I'm just wondering if it's even feasible to get the rolling chassis out from under the body. Ref height I'd say about 1 meter min but you may have to remove the fuel filler pipe as thats the tallest item Wanted D4s non runners pm for competitive price.
