Risking sacrilege for a moment, the D4 isn't a pretty car. What it is is brutal, industrial design at its best. It's a firm statement of intent. It's one of those designs that doesn't need a badge or a grille to inform anyone of what it is - unless they've been living under a stone since WWII...
The D5 is just another "pretty" car.
Despite being much less pretty, perversely, the D4 is the better looking car by a long shot! 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: 2 x FL2 as โsecondโ cars ๐
2021 to date: Hinckley built โ14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built โ14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!
(One of only two known to exist in the world!)
The D5 rear end is wrong....its one that the stylist took over from the thinking head designer......the thought was MPV as opposed to SUV

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

The same thing was said about the RRS2 when it was released. Lots of people really didn't like the back end.
Seems to me that the only modern LR with a resolved rear end is the FFRR. It's also the only one without the two tone plastic "nappy" below the rear bumper.
I think the FFRR is the best looking LR new product now.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

I like the look of the RRS2. If you cover the rear end of the D5 it looks very similar to the RRS2. But uncover it and it just doesn't look good, can't quite put my finger on what exactly is wrong with it. I'm sure its a lovely car inside and very capable. I haven't seen it in the flesh so won't write it off just yet....not that I can afford one .I'll stick to my old Defender for now

I did take a FFRR out to try before buying another D4 recently. Unfortunately, the tailgate lacks that incredibly useful split height of the D3/4. Surprisingly, compared to the D4, we also found it a bit too car like for us.
I'd agree with you though, it's still the most distinctive of the range and probably the best looking too. I'm pretty sure that Gerry McGovern must have noticed this and is probably working on fixing this right now!2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

It could be worse; it's not, full on, Victorian bath tub curvy, it looks much more like a corned beef tin

Never take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.
Yep, the FFRR is the most appealing to me now, just so long as it's not blinged-up, and yeah, it looks so much cleaner without the stupid @rse-piece.

The backside of the D5 is the laziest piece of design I've seen in ages....completely out of proportion and looks like a design afterthought.....an ugly featureless slab, tacked on once they'd run out of ideas (or time,or money or all 3)....
Can you tell I'm not happy with the back ?
Still,I'm sure Nicki Minaj will buy one....

I take back the "pretty" comment, that's downright ugly! The FFRR shares the same "functional elegance" (thank you, LfW) as the D4.
Now, please stop drawing Gerry McGovern's attention to this, before he heads over to the FFRR production line in Solihull with the biggest Ugly Stick in his not inconsiderable armory! 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

I'll bet FFRR aficionados are getting worried about the possible ways this could go
The Top of The Heap....has to go far higher to compete...the Bentley bentago is the new bench mark
Totally unaffordable but worth looking...
