D4 to D4.5 Facelift questions

I've had a good look to see if the question has been asked before and couldn't see it so hopeful I'm not repeating a question already asked (and answered!) Embarassed

On a bit of a journey to 2014 facelift my 2013 D4

In order to fit the 2014> grille and lights, does the front bumper NEED replacing?

Everything I've read suggests it does but wondered if anyone had gone bold and tried to change just the lights and grille without the bumper?

All the D4 to D4.5 facelift ‘packages’ I’ve seen include the front bumper but if this isn't really necessary would make the job a lot quicker and DIY'able.

Appreciate the silver fog lights surrounds and tow eye cover on the front bumper are an improvement over pre-facelift, however I’ve already had a stab at doing the surrounds and tow eye cover myself, which I don’t think looks too shabby (but am prepared for negative feedback!) and changed the bonnet lettering. This will also be updated to the silver landmark lettering once I can get round to it.

All of the aesthetic improvement at the front is in the grille and the lights (in my opinion anyway) and if these can be changed without the bumper being done, happy days.

Back looks much improved with black facelift lights, black LR badge

No plans to change the mirrors as we tow a horse trailer several times a week and the Transit-sized mirrors come in very handy for this. Very Happy

Body colouring the door handles Santorini Black would be nice, but with the sensor buttons in - I don’t imagine colour coding these to be a simple/quick/cheap job.

Any experiences welcomed Thumbs Up

Nope, there's about a 1cm gap under the grille

Cheers Spike - you've made my day. Its difficult to see any gap in the photo.

Debating which grille to go for but the black with silver outline is currently winning:

Black grille on black car my OCD probably wouldn't even notice the gap. Thanks again Thumbs Up

How are the light output on the 4.5 lights compared to the 4.0 lights?
Did someone write that the light output on the 4.0 is superior to the 4.5 lights?
In hight beam my 4.0 lights light up the tree tops (inner fill inn lights) which is not possible to adjust and my OCD struggles with this in every drive in the dark Big Cry

In the 2012 lights there is a main beam and a motor shutter that 'opens' the dipped beam too.

In the 2015 lights there is no dedicated main beam, just a motor shutter that opens the dipped beam up.

The dipped beam in the new xenons is marginally better than my old halogens, but the main beam is pretty weak in comparison.

My old MY11 halogens were also brighter than the MY16 xenons on main beam. Only the dip is better, which is a bit disappointing really. Find myself thinking spots might be a good idea on the MY16.

Yep, the later headlights are quite poor compared to the earlier D3/D4.

I changed my 2011 to the upgraded headlights and grill but initially left the bumper, in the flesh there is no way anyone would notice the gap in the bumper unless they knew to look for it, it's only visible on the bottom left and bottom right side of the grill and its very small.

I only upgraded my bumper as I got a 2016 one for free. In Aus a lot of people put bullbars on the front end so the bumpers are tossed, this might be less common in the UK until you get a kangaroo problem like we have!

Also I think the my11 halogen lights were better than the 2015 xenon.. but of course the xenon DRL looks much cooler hence the upgrade.

I've done every upgrade externally from my11 to my16 aside from the mirrors so happy to answer any questions you have

Sorry to go slightly off topic, but which lamps are these please? Are they good?

As someone who's now partially de-facelifted two MY16 cars, I'm interested to try and put back some of the main beam that it would seem I'm missing Thumbs Up

Absolutely. Picked mine up for a bargain on eBay. Keep your eye out if you're in no rush.
