D3 fobs can only be programmed once, D4 fobs can be reprogrammed, do a search as there as some unprogrammed ones now available for about £25 from China Thumbs Up

I'm going to stick my neck out and risk disagreeing with you. It's the vehicle which is reprogrammed, not the key, which means that you should be able to re-use a key fob from another vehicle, just swap the blade over.
If I'm correct in my thinking, the key fob is only a transmitter and has no receiver, therefore it cannot be programmed.

It's a transmitter to open doors etc, but once in the ignition its in an induction loop for the immobiliser, I suspect it's this part that cannot be recoded?

Agreed, the transponder cannot be recoded, but it's not meant to be. When you buy a new key, you are programming the car configuration to accept the code generated by the new transponder. There are two way transponders, but they are not in themselves reprogrammed. In effect, they return a code which is a relatively simple transfiguration of the original code sent to them.
As a very simple example, imagine that the transponder is programmed to return (transmitted code) + 7. So the car sends 354778 and the transponder returns 354785. This adds an extension to the immobiliser security which would prevent a simple clone of the key - if the criminal simply scans what comes out of the key and recreates it, it will not work as the pseudo random number generated by the car cannot be predetermined.

considering you can get a new key with electronics on ebay for £19, it's not worth messing with old keys
