How To Detail Your Disco

Hi All,

Just want to apologise to all of you who have been pm'ing me. Been a bit busy with other things of late and not had time to sort this new information out.

I have put together what is hopefully a full description of how to detail your car, without going into a full polish which is a whole new field. The method and products are what I picked up off a detailing forum and it works for me and others who also use it.

Please understand that although I have shown mainly one company to buy the products from I have no affiliation to them but do use them myself. The products mentioned do have other manufacturer alternatives. For further information you can search and read about the products on the companies web sites I have mentioned. Or goggle for others.

I have shown a step by step process and then given a link to the products mentioned.

Hopefully it will all make sense, if not leave a note on the thread or pm me and hopefully I will get back to you a bit quicker this time.

1. Pressure wash to get most of muck off.

2. Use Gilmour and Snow Foam leave for 5 - 10 mins. Hose/pressure wash off. (Gilmour is an attachment that you put on the end of a hose which when you add 1 1/2" of snow foam, leaves a good penetrating white foam over the car)

3. Use two bucket method with Meguiars Hyper Wash and wool mitt.
(Fill one bucket with clean warm water and the other half full with warm water, in the half full bucket add one shot of Megs hyper wash. Wollen mitt is then used to wash car off, rinsing every time in the full bucket)

3A. Make sure you spend a lot of time rinsing the car with a hose after the pressure washer. You need to make sure every bit of grit is removed. This will be a painstaking job and one you have not been used to doing in the past.

4. Spray with quick detailer (QD) spray (water down 50:50) and Dry with Large Waffle Weave Microfibre Drying Towel, lightly wiping over the bodywork. (The QD spray is what will make a phenomenal difference to your car, making it shine even though you have not polished it!!)

5. Auto-clay car with the QD as lubricant as mentioned above if you think it is necessary. Not always necessary and I suggest you do not do this to start with as it is a bit of an art. It is carried out if there are impurities in the paint work. You can test this by getting one of those plastic bags used for veg in the supermarket. Wear it like a glove and run you hand over washed paintwork. If you feel and hear it catching then you need to clay the car.

6. Meguiars all purpose cleaner on wheels. Followed up with a specific cleaner and
New Look Trim Gel.

7. Inside the interior none leather will be cleaned using Meguiars All Purpose Cleaner (mentioned above) and where necessary a dashboard brush. Then use Natural Look.

If we had a detailing section, then we could get another forum sponsor perhaps.......

Good instructions & I'd add only that for the pressure JetWash, try to only use it for under the car & wheels/arches & the lower half of the car, to avoid jetting off any waxes/sealants etc on your nice shiny surfaces. You'd be amazed how much damage a jetwash can do (& NEVER jetwash your radiator, use a steady stream of water).

The important point if you haven't built up the kit yet, is to invest in the Wool Mitt (instead of Sponge!), and two buckets. Those two steps alone will save you endless swirl marks particularly on darker cars.

It's coming up to Christmas, so there's some easy things there for the Christmas List...... 8)

Only thing i'd add is protection once you have clayed the paint. Not necessary all the time but the addition of a wax or sealant on a D3, especially if used offroad is advisable.

To prep the paint after claying, Autoglym SRP (red polish) is ideal to remove any stubborn bits. Use a damp microfibre cloth/applicator avoiding panel edges (avoids leaving the white residue) Remember this is a polish and offers no protection when used on it's own.

Wax and Sealants have similar qualities, but are very different. Both offer good paint protection and will produce superb beading.

Sealants generally do not have any cleaning agents or wax and are more durable than wax. Probably the best on the market at the moment is Jetseal 109

Two coats of this will provide winter protection and give added protection when offroading. nothing will adhere to the paint surface, but will simply sit on the sealant waiting to be jetwashed off. Simple.

A wax finish will give a high gloss wet look finish to your D3, especially if used on darker colours Thumbs Up A good all round wax that will last for a few months is P21S. Inexpensive and a tub should last a couple of years, obvioulsy depending on how often you use it. Some members on here, it would last a lifetime before being removed from the delivery wrapper Wink Whistle

For an outstanding finish Swissvax do a range of waxs that give the finish a WOW factor, but do not come cheap.

I carry Swissvax Best of Show and Mystery for the best finish possible.

Zymol are also outstanding waxes, but pound for pound I think Swissvax are the dogs danglies.

For the best of both worlds, with a bit of compromise on sealant and wax finish Collonite cannot be beaten. This stuff once applied properly lasts for months and months.....a true waxing anomoly and cheap into the bargain.

Also a little tip. Use the wax to condition your door seals to prevent temperature damage in winter and treat you plastics such as door mirror casing and door trims. Easier than trim spray or gel and will provide UV protection preventing fading and can be layered each time you wax the D3.

What I generally do when doing a detail, depending on what the customer requires, is Clay, SRP, Glaze, two coats of sealant and then a thin coat of high carnauba wax (>45%) to bring it all to life. Or simply clay, SRP and wax.

Bodsy, I'm gonna disagree with you over the jet washer mate. Properly applied sealant and wax will not be removed with a jetwasher unless it's a heated water unit and used at stupidly high rates. What you should see if the protection is still on the paintwork is the water sheeting off the car when being used, taking the muck with it.

Sure, with a good Sealant (C&S Are finally delivering my JetSeal109 tomorrow! after only a 3 week wait....) then the JetWash should be a breeze, was thinking more along the lines of a 'raw' car with dirt on the paintwork, I always made the assumption that the jetwash could push some of the fine dirt further into the soft paintwork?

Once you've clayed, then all should be fine. But I'll bow respectfully to your real-working knowledge & not to my pi$$ poor thoughts.. Wink

Each to their own though, but I've been keeping the jetwash pressure way down just lately Thumbs Up

If folks post up what they want, I may be able to get products at a discount. AG stuff I can get at trade (+posting).

Not sure what discounts I can get as jetseal and the likes I pay near full price as they sell well without discounting.
