To quote Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerry_McGovern):

"Returning to the UK in 2003 as Creative Director of Lugeii, Ford’s design and creativity centre, Ingeni in Soho, London, McGovern rejoined Land Rover as Director, Advanced Design in April 2004. Explaining why, McGovern said "Land Rover fascinates me more than any other car maker because it has its roots in pure design as opposed to styling.[1] Ford’s Group VP Design, J Mays, noted that "Gerry is uniquely suited to this role. He's already shown the world that he fully understands Land Rover's DNA[2]"

Meanwhile, in an unguarded moment:

Do you suppose McGovern once worked for Lego? If that is the new LR Defender you can keep it.

LR couldn't just keep knocking out the same old thing forever. They all have to be updated and every time that happens, everyone who considers themselves true off roading LR fans immediately throw scorn upon the design. The same was said about the 3 and some still say it about the 4. After a while people see that the update was in fact much better than it could have been. I think the 5 would suit me well but I'm a tower not an off roader. I think it will make a decent van, people carrier and limo. Off road credentials look good on paper but will only be realised when someone here who knows what he's talking about gives it the thumbs up. Then we'll see a turn around regarding the likers and haters. It will sell because it does a lot of what the buyers want it to. It's still the Swiss Army Knife of cars, more so than any other.

Yes, but every time it changes it moves along the spectrum; it is not going to do so infinitely and still please the same people. Thumbs Up

A bit of everything really; all the issues have been said and they are not all huge, but the thing is, however large or small the downsides are, it just doesn't bring any benefits to balance them either. I'd really gain very little from a D5 over my D3, and less still vs a D4, so even when I give it the benefit of the doubt on the magnitude of the downsides, there's naff all reason why I would bother buy it. Neutral

It will become too costly to keep a 3/4 on the road and eventually you'll have to give in. Then what? BMW, Merc, Volvo or Jeep. Yeah right, not me. I'll be getting a two year old D5 to carry on throwing money at LR, just not as much as I would have if it had been new.

Fear not, it was only a concept and even Mr McG realised that it wasn't good enough and they've admitted that the next Defender won't look like this. It might look like an Evoque, but it won't look like this Rolling Eyes

There's a hell of a buffer vs the cost of a D5 though, and that's a long way off. It seems unlikely that there won't be alternatives available in 10+ years time - maybe the Defender will do the trick - but if the D5 is a last resort, I still don't think that is exactly something for LR to be proud of!

The D5 shape is about as far away from a pracitical / viable van shape as you can get....the D3/4 is a cube shape.....to me brilliant vehicle packaging
That is if a van vehicle is to be used for light goods, tradesmen with tools & materials etc.

Vans aren't style items.....usually the credentials list commences with practical load carrying.

The analogy to Swiss Army knives......I disagree as regards the D5....it's multi tasking will never surpass the D3/4 on the actual shape / load carrying (shape length x breadth x hieght wise)...unless you carry plastic balls (the volume test medium).

The title thread will never be complete as regards the split tailgate......if good enough for a FFRR why not the D5?
The supposed disadvantages are totally outweighed by the multi use platform in the D3/4 lower tailgate.
What I have seen on the D5 demo cars...... "the activity platform" is as said before "a joke"....whoever dreamt this up as a "sequel" or alternative to the lower tailgate was either constrained by the instruction to "come up with some thing" or having a laugh...or not he full shilling.

If this was a feature of some other 4x4 make we would be having a laugh.....the very sad truth is on te D5 not funny at all.

Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

LfW......I don't think LR are that proud.....the D5 as seen "in the flesh" is a poor compromise....very poor.
The demo person I spoke to in the Trafford Centre D5 event said he had spoken to a whole load of dissapointed potential customers......

For almost the same money and similar spec (apart from leather seats in the Land cruiser), what would you choose?

Not even sure why land cruisers are mentioned in the same breath as the D5. Personally, I will miss the boxy practical shape of the D3/4, but when I can afford a second hand D5, that is my next vehicle without a doubt.

Neither.

There will be good, very usable, D4's around for at least 5 or 6 years yet; we really shouldn't have to accept these sorts of compromises and with the bar set this low, at least one manufacturer should easily be able to crack it in that time Thumbs Up

I'd like it to be LR but it's, very sadly, highly unlikely until fresh new talent leads their design team. Following Chris Bangle's departure from BMW, their design department recovered almost overnight; I believe that LR's could too.
