Worn lower front wishbone - does it cause brake shudder? |
|
Recently been on a trip to Hebrides. The roads were very poor at times and a pronounced knocking became very apparent from the front right. It was especially bad under light braking going over bumps.
I checked it over and found the rear bush on the right hand lower front was very worn and moved very easily when pryed with a bar.
The car is booked into dealer for this to be fixed, Warranty direct are paying.
Since this happened the brakes have felt very rough. There is a judder through the steering when braking at motorway speeds. It's not all the time though. The brakes are not very old, having used oem parts from AF.
It just strikes me that both symptoms appear at the same time. Brakes were fine until after the trip.
Could the wishbone be making a slight normally undetectable shudder feel worse?
Cars on 65k now.

The whole suspension on that side will shift slightly whenever you apply the brakes
as that will transfer load on the arm so the slightest shudder will be amplified so yes,
this can cause the shuddering.

That's what I was thinking. What surprised me was how quickly this bush deteriorated. Its only done a few k miles since mot and it was fine then.
Now it makes a horrible crunching noise when I lever it with a bar.

Not levering with the bar will solve the crunching noise problem but replacing the offending bushes/arm will allow you to lever away with abandon.
Maybe the MOT wasn't as thorough this time and they missed the wear or, if roads really that bad on your hols, it could easily have been enough to finish off the bush if it was oh the way out anyway.

Yes
I went through 3 sets of discs, and a full set of discs, pads and calipers trying to cure my brake wobble.
In the end, it was a lower wishbone bush, despite no knocking or excess play in the bushes My D3 Build Thread

Let's see what happens when it's replaced then.

funny you should day that on the way back from holiday I developed a knock when braking .if I brake very gentle I get nothing , if I brake hard I get a single knock if I brake somewhere between I get a repeated knock and the steering wheel deflects as the arm moves on the bush .
new arms later in the month for me You're not afraid of the dark are you ?
