Engine's died on motorway in France, low battery message
We'd been driving at a steady 80mph for about an hour when without warning, the engine died and had to coast to the hard shoulder. There were no nasty noises or obvious warning lamps/messages beforehand. Once stopped, the car would not turn over enough to fire up back up, and the dash was displaying "low battery, please start engine"
The recovery guy thinks it "grave" and could be the engine because it would not turn over. He couldn't speak a word of English so didn't understand the battery message. My hunch/hope is its the alternator, but would that cause the engine to cut out?
Anyway, it's being taken to a Land Rover dealer tomorrow but we're supposed to be travelling home on Monday

A failed alternator will eventually result in the engine stopping, you should have had a battery warning light for a little while first though...

It's very possible the alternator could be goosed and if you have been driving along using 50 amps and the alternator is only chucking out 20 amps then the other 30 amps is drawn from the battery. Eventually the battery voltage reduces so low that the fuel is cut off.

a quick check would be drop another battery on, if it starts you know the engine is OK and that is a power supply issue, so as others have said, probably the alternator isnt working correctly.

Looks like it could be far more serious and that the crankshaft is knackered and the engine is goosed. Managed to get back yesterday but the car is still in France.

I have got a warranty, but it's a 3rd party one with a single claim limit of £5,000 and a poor reputation for paying out, but still better than nothing. They also will not pay for claims outside UK and Ireland so the car has to be brought back to the UK for repair.
