Thanks everyone.
It's done 54,000 miles, serviced (by a reputable indy) less than 2,000 miles ago. Before that, all main dealer history. Oil level was spot on just before setting off for France.
Luckily I've got the all singing RAC European cover which has been great so far, and since getting us picked up off the motorway within 30 minutes they've arranged and paid for;
-taxi back to where we were staying
-hire car back to Boulogne
-local UK taxi (minibus) to come out to Boulogne and take us back to Kent.
The policy also covers bringing the Discovery back to the UK for repair and a week's car hire here in the meantime, so I've already got my monies worth.
One extra hassle is that all our luggage is still in France. The only hire car available was a small Citroen and there's five of us plus the dog.

I would also be looking at the oil filter to see if it had been fitted correctly. If it is distorted then chances are the spigot was not put in position first and then housing screwed down. Wrong fitting of filter will block the circulation of oil.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

If there was a problem with the oil filter, would it do another 2,000 miles and with no warning lights? A further thought is that if it was proven to be fitted incorrectly, it stops being a warranty issue and becomes a question of taking action against the garage concerned. This would be either getting them to agree to fix it all, or having it done elsewhere and then trying to recover the cost.

I recall seeing photos of crumpled filters and suggestions in threads that this could cause oil starvation or failure to filter the oil leading to wear. I would check the state of your filter and if all ok you can at least discount that as a factor.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.
