Hi guys
as ive posted before im about to move from my beloved D2 which has been superb reliability wise
I could do with an auto as we tow the caravan a lot however ive spotted a nice low miles 2009 manual.
As you do I did the google on manuals and there arecp, enty that have had issues with multiple clutch changes even on lower milage D3s
are they that bad
im not bothered about all the niggly bits that need maintenance or swapping out as part of the Landy life , ive done loads of that in the last 25 years
cheers
Phil

Our manual's been fine - original clutch at 168000 with only the detent spring needing changing in that time. Oh, and I have changed the gearbox fluid at least once. The downside is that the gear knob and gaiter are starting to look really shabby though.-------------------------------------------------------------------

11 yr old manual, 80k, other than having to perform xy reset once ( clumsy double de-clutch) no problems. That being said, I rarely tow and when I do, use low range when reversing.
Of course, given the choice, I would go for an auto if I bought another one as I have become lazy in my old age.CGA

Problem is buying secondhand regardless of mileage you wont know what the clutch condition is like, it could for example be 75 percent worn but still feel fine on the pedal.

the answer to your question is NO
What I can say...
a quarter of a million kilometers here, manual, and with the original clutch and without any sign of fatigue, resounding thrust and total satisfaction!!!
....also tell you I dare not say that the manual is better or worse than the automatic, it depends on the taste or needs, perhaps to trawl tow or much dense city traffic the automatic is more considered, but what has been demonstrated over the years it is that the manual is equal to or more robust than the automatic and what at first looked like an advantage in maintaining the machine, not having to change discs clutch is not true at all, auto need costly oil gearbox changes that make it more expensive to maintain than a manual...IMHO
lost in translation!

226000 miles on my 2005 manual including towing heavy trailers
It had a clutch before I had it but suspect it didn't need it as it had the broken circlip problem (fixed for under £20) that was over 90000 miles ago!
Not looking forward to probably having to go auto on next car. Am I Gammon or Woke ? - I neither know nor care.

I got my 2006 SE manual at 89K miles, it had had three clutches by then! The previous owner suggested it was the way his wife held the car on a hill outside the school every day, by slipping the clutch. I hope he is right. I do like the ability to chose what gear I want, but I have wondered a few times if an auto would have been better.
There have been more threads on here about auto troubles, and torque convertor problems than manual/ clutch issues IMO.Richard

That may be down to sheer numbers, given that nearly 90% of all D3s built were automatics.
