I guess any winch is better than no winch as long as you know the limits. For most situations the EP9 will probably be OK, especially if you use a double line with a pulley block etc.
NO winch is better than an overloaded one ! remember the thread a while ago about fitting a (I think) 1500lb winch 'just in case'?
the only options were carry on or abandon the vehicle?
You forgot the 'carry on and stand well back option' In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

As often observed at pay-n-play sites. Last one I saw was a t*sser in a bobtailed RRC who nearly ripped the entire front off his motor using that approach. I had to stop him but the evil part of me wishes I hadn't and just stood back and took pictures 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

so, with thanks to the knowledgeable contributors and taking into account I'm unlikely to buy a new winch when I have a reasonably unused EP9 equiped with Dynema rope from DB;
1. get a hidden mount from Uncle Ray
2. don't expect the EP9 to perform miracles?and theeeeennn......???
