Clicking noise coming from the rear of my D3 |
|
Hi everyone,
Can anyone help me out please? I had the tyres and brake discs changed on my discovery about 3 weeks ago now, ever since this I have been able to hear a clicking noise coming from what I think is the rear of the car like a stone is stuck in the tyre, I have checked all 4 tyres for stones, screws etc and can't see anything, and it's now starting to drive me mad

when this happened to me it was the handbrake cable, the bracket that fixes to the suspension arm that holds it away from the wheel had snapped and every time the wheel rotated the wheel weight was rubbing on it, it almost rubbed through the inner cable but i found it in time
i used a thick cable tie to hold it in place , which is still there,
i had forgotten about it until i read this
must order a new one, they are only about £10
hope this helps

Which discs and pads have you had changed?
Check the stone guard isn't knocking against the disc (give them a gentle pull towards the discs, you'll soon spot if part of it is too close) and that the anti rattle shims for the pads are centred correctly, they may have shifted a bit whilst everything was bedding in.
Is the noise more noticeable are you turn left or right? I bet it's the front and not the rear.

Thanks for the response, funny you should mention about the handbrake cable Randylover, when I was on my way home from the garage I heard the same ticking noise and when I looked around I also found the same bracket had snapped and cable tied the cable to the bodywork.
I had the front discs and pads changed at the same time as the tyres Nick, the noise seems to pretty much go when I turn the steering, where are the anti rattle shims please? I will check them in the morning.
Thanks again

The shims sit at the top and bottom of the ends of the pads, made of thin metal. I think it's most likely to be one of the stone shields though just catching the disc. Pull the shield all around gently towards the discs and if you find the shield touching easily then just bend it away a bit
