Scam involving my D3

As some of you will have seen I have my D3 up for sale on the forum.

Yesterday I had a forum member contact me telling me that he had seen my car on eBay for £5000. He had seen that it was less than half the price as advertised on the D3 forum, had put 2 + 2 together and realised that it was a scam.

I went onto eBay and, posing as an interested buyer, asked a series of questions and offered the asking price. In turn I received an e mail back -

---------------------------------------------------

Hello,

Please excuse the length of my email, may take a few minutes to read it. We
get too many letters, we want to filter out all potential buyers. I work in
the international logistics and financial services company. We are selling
this car on behalf of a UK citizen. My job is to present the vehicle to all
potential buyers.

- The car is currently registered in UK. As you can see in the pictures is
UK model (right hand drive). Has a clear Hpi. No accidents. The car is in
perfect condition inside and outside and looks and drive like new.
- The car belongs to a UK citizen, he got a new job in Germany, and he did
not have time to take care of the sale.
- He signed a contract with us, and our company has the right to sell the
car in his name.
- We have the right to complete all legal procedures required for the sale
and registration of a vehicle.
- The car is currently in Rostock, Germany in our warehouse. The car is
sealed in the container and ready for shipment.
- We can deliver the car to any city in UK. The shipping fees will be paid
by the current owner. According to the company, delivery takes about 5-10
days.
- The car has been checked very carefully and meticulously by our certified
mechanics, and it really is in excellent condition (Inspection Report
available).
- The buyer will benefit of 5 days to make his own verifications in a
certified car dealer.

*If you want to continue with this transaction, please send me your Full
Name, Telephone Number and Address, so that I could open a case for you and
put you in touch with my colleagues from the Financial Department. They
will explain the buying procedure of this transaction and give you a full
Inspection Report of this vehicle.*

Let me know if you are interested to buy it.

Best Regards,
Jennifer Huber

Quite a story eh? Especially as "Bertha" is sat on my driveway as I type!

Anyway there is also a website / blog spot advertising my car that has been set up by the scammers

So a big thank you to Matthew, who is new to the forum for spotting this scam and making me aware. eBay have now removed the add, but it looks as if there is little else that can be done. If I get a phone number I will let you know.

I contacted the National Fraud Hot Line but as soon as it was established that I personally had not been a victim of fraud they lost interest.

I pointed out to them that whilst I hadn't been conned some poor Censored out there quite possibly could. Their reply was that until that happened no offence had been committed.......

I am in the market for a good used hay baler(farming type) I found one on Eblag exactly what I was after but it was on the Isle of Arran with a £495 delivery charge, so unpracticle to view, but delivery charge acceptable, I asked several technical questions about it and they where all answered technically correct and agreeable. As is a norm with Eblag and expensive items the seller offered it me at less than the advertised price for a quick sale, I agreed cash on delivery, but he wouldn't accept and said he would send an Eblag invoice Confused which duly arrived, quite an official looking document and I nearly fell for it and would have done had it not been for my wife.
I reported it to Eblag who removed the listing, but as I was and still am in the market for a baler and still looking in the next few days I saw no less than 5 listings using the same advert but a different location and different make of baler.
Ebag buyers be aware, don't part with you money until you see the whites of their eyes.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

A bloke from Sheffield recently got caught selling non existent PC's on Ebay from an address that turned out to be an empty warehouse in the area. Not before he had collected and transferred some £50K into other PayPal accounts! Thankfully in this instance, a copper found the advert to be suspicious and made enquiries which led to the capture of the person involved. That person is currently before the courts.

I lost £6600 this week in a scam involving a VW camper.

The banks are useless and the Action Fraud lot just seem to take details. As the fraud officer at HSBC said, '' everything is in the criminals favour''. I'll do a write up about it next week. It was very well done.

My OH recently had a run in with an eBay seller. She bought (and paid for with PayPal) an expensive item of clothing, but was then messaged by the seller asking if she'd accept a refund and make the sale outside eBay and thorough PayPal friends and family to avoid their charges.

Considering they were operating as a business seller (and going outside of their way to be business-like, emails from departments etc.) this seemed a bit rich so she declined and asked them to proceed as planned. They then cancelled the sale and refunded the money through PayPal. As she pointed out to them (and me) put them in breach of their contract with her, and eBay's Ts and Cs. It also had the effect of depriving her of her money for about five days thanks to PayPal's glacial refund systems. And she hadn't asked them to refund the money, but to proceed with the sale.

Neither eBay nor PayPal seemed interested about it, although she did wonder about HMRC because they're almost certainly dodging tax too.

That's a very very common trick - expensive items listed below their real value - by sellers with little if any feedback, eBay don't appear interested in removing these clearly fraudulent listing - here's just a few examples

The simplest way to avoid these scams is to avoid using eBay. EBay will get the message eventually and start taking action.

The spammers just move elsewhere then. They're already invading Gumtree.

I'd be tempted to ask for the inspection report.

The problem with fraud of this kind is that it's beyond the reach of most police forces given that most fraudsters are based overseas. My last employer (a global company who really should have had better processes in place) effectively gave away €15k of equipment to a scammer. The initial email address pertaining to be from the MD of John Lewis PLC screamed fraud, but the German employees involved took it at face value. The goods were even delivered to an alley behind Iceland in Lewisham.

The local cops were very helpful initially, but soon found out this was a European Organised Crime network with West African links. The guys who collected the equipment were Eastern European guys arriving in a number of cars, paid in cash to deliver it elsewhere and knew nothing. The logistics and cost of mounting an operation to take this further were beyond their reach, particularly as the Proactive CID unit had been disbanded to try and keep up with the mountain of other crime in the area.

The message is trust no-one and keep any transaction as safe as possible - if it seems too much of a bargain then it's probably duff. A friend lost over £7k buying a van that didn't exist via ebay. I stick to buying low value stuff through this site.
