For me, running the D4 is s total extravagance! One day I'll need to face the prospect of going back to an regular estate car too, but I'd prefer to get 250-300,000 miles out of the D4 first Thumbs Up

Shame to give up on the D4 quite so early, but hope that you're able to get close to the 35-40 mpg that you're hoping for Thumbs Up

Thanks everyone. You've succeeded in making me feel thoroughly guilty and desperately apprehensive! Rolling with laughter
Your loyalty to the D4 is wholly admirable Bow down

So we’re getting a 2015 Audi A6 Allroad with 16k on the clock and 2 years warranty remaining. Ok, of course it’s not as capable: although it has extra ground clearance over the Avant, it’s not a real off-roader but it should cope with farm tracks and grass fields which is all we really need; it doesn’t have anything like the load space so I need to buy a new dogbox; the driving position is not so commanding and the seats are not electric memory ones (which really helps when one of you is 6ft and the other 5!). But, it will be more economical (realistically 35-40mpg where the D4 averaged 25-27), certainly much quicker (but that was really not important) and cheaper to tax (again marginal).

Sounds like you are trying to convince yourself, you've not convinced me but good luck Laughing

You've got a point there. That sounds like a lot more (quite serious) compromises than having to live with an imperfect glovebox and needing to replace the boot release mechanism once every 100,000 miles, especially when the OP says that the D4 is the best car he's ever owned.

I've only run 4 cars from new to beyond 100,000 miles before (apart from one Montego estate, that simply dissolved into a small pile of iron oxide!) and do you know what? Nothing happened Shocked They kept running just fine Thumbs Up

100k miles is not a reason to get rid of a car these days. I had a F1 from new to 192k & would most likely still have it if it hadn't got written off - replaced it with another that was at 123k then & now getting close to 150k. Had a D1 from 12k to 175k & again it was only a write off that took it away from me.

A friend had an A6 all road, looked stylish but didn't last long due to high fuel costs, servicing, etc. - was nicknamed the 'black slug' .

Only been in my D4 a few months but could not conceive going from one to an A6 Censored no!

D1 200 Tdi - sold
90 Turbo Diesel - sold
Ser 2a SWB - sold and glad I 'got rid'
Ser 2 SWB - sold but wish I still had it!

I believe if your lifestyle allows you to make do with the A6 you have made the right decision , for me it would be hard to justify the D4 just for the commander view , if I didn't need it for the 3.5 ton towing and 6 mates and 3 sunroofs and the fridge and the ability to take it all off road , I would settle for a German estate car definitely Razz

Those that know me will be aware I used to change my cars an awful lot Embarassed , always convinced myself I needed something cheaper or better off road, then better on road, more economical, etc etc etc but always came back to the D3 or D4 as there really is no other car like it on the market. As I know I will not be able to afford the D5 I am now seriously thinking of swapping my MY11 for a MY16 as there seem to be a fair few knocking around and nothing else will do what I want.

I've thought about it a few times but I couldn't bring myself to leave the brand. Next car though, I've made my mind up I'm going for a used Range Rover Vogue 3.0 TDV6. It would perhaps make more sense going for a D5 but I've always fancied a Range Rover it's my dream motor.
