Back axle failure.
I have just had an email from a cousin telling me of a friend who has a 64 plate Disco. Apparently the rear axle snapped and overturned the car. Land Rover eventually paid uo (£3,800) but only after a considerable amount of hassle . It seems that the ABS was sending false messages.
Has anyone heard this story?
A D4 doesn't have a "back axle". Also, if a fault caused a vehicle to overturn, Im sure the payout would be more than £3,800. Cant see how an ABS fault would cause any part of the rear suspension to fail, it only controls the application of the brakes. So I call BS on the story or at least on the details presented.

Faulty rear e-diff maybe?

Wording from cousin's email.
He took his Discovery (64 plate) in for a service and reported to the garage that "something did not feel right and there was a spasmodic array of warning lights" vying for attention. When collecting the vehicle he was told that they could find nothing wrong
He goes on a family trip to Ireland. Within a few days the car veered off the road but without injury to anyone. He was horrified t to discover that the rear axle had snapped - virtually in half. To cut a long story short... Land Rover said it was his fault because he had driven too fast into a pothole and that will be £3,800 thank you very much. The guy denied all knowledge of hitting any pothole but paid up uner protest. Later the Agency that monitors "recalls" got involved and proved that Land Rover were not only to blame but were fully aware of the fault. Apparently the ABS software was giving false information to the rear suspension causing it to drop lower than intended therefore putting huge strain on the rear axle. Land Rover conceded defeat and reimbursed.

That's a very confused picture
The ABS should not affect ride height as far as I can see??? So what snapped? The drive shaft at one side snapped??

"Veered off the road without causing injury" is very different to "Rear axle snapped and overturned the car"
I suspect a little exaggeration may have crept into the story at various stages.

Please do not shoot the messenger! I agree that it seems very weird and wonderful but I do believe that my cousin gave me the info in good faith.

Seems all a bit strange, I know Discos have their faults but it's the first I've heard of axles snapping and causing car to flip or veer of the road considering the amount of stress these cars are subjected to during development testing.

As said the rear axle can't snap in half and if this was a common problem I would have expected somebody on here to have had the same problem. Maybe the owner is misunderstanding the explanation given to him. Cheers Ian

Possibly rear wheel speed sensor rather than ABS could cause issues with suspension, It certainly did with mine.

The story is beginning to unravel somewhat. My cousin read about this in an edition (March?) of Auto Express. Apparently the DVSA were involved. I have looked at that website and cannot see any mention of this problem. Other well known ones are there.
