Speaking to Alive Tuning, the performance gains in removing said equipment is negligible

As said in the article, the DPF is rarely to blame, it's a separate issue which prevents the DPF regenerating

I didn't know it affected insurance, and you can be done for tax evasion though Shocked

Check out the authors and quote sources. All have a vested interest in selling either DPFs or DPF cleaners.

No source quoted for "Research findings to better detect DPF removal could be implemented as early as next year".

"Not only will it invalidate car insurance..." - any modification will potentially do this. In practice, I very much doubt that part of an accident investigation - even one where a fatality is involved - would include a tear down of the DPF box.

"...and potentially fall under the veil of tax evasion, due to low emissions based road fund licensing." - VOSA roadside inspection anyone? They're even rarer than Traffic Police.

I believe that "MOT could be changed to include a complete engine strip down and rebuild", perfectly accurate statement due to the use of the word 'could', but it won't be.

The usual trade publication churn and scaremongering. typically used when real stories are a bit thin. I'm not saying that the new regs won't come in, but that this article presents conjecture as fact.

Fair comment, but would you dispute the figures on death's attributed to diesel particulate matter in the quoted report from DEFRA? Considering it's around 10 times the annual road death toll, it's pretty significant.

Yes, I would until I know what the criteria used in the statistic are.
I don't for one minute deny that pollution is detrimental to health. I do, however, always question statistics, who published them, who paid for them and what their agenda is.
Remember, diesel is less harmful than petrol according to government statistics not so long ago?

A bit apples vs pears with those figures. One is an actual hard figure and the other is a statistical rendering that takes nothing else into account (eg someone who is supposed to die early because of 'X' actually died in a car crash 20 years earlier, depriving them of the opportunity to die from skin cancer 5 years later etc).

There is a teaching paper somewhere that reinforces the limitations of 'attributable' deaths by summing various different papers together to 'prove' that the entire UK population is in fact already attributably dead from something.

Also how many big gensets and old tractors are around the country with barely anything for an exhaust for their diesel fumes?
I'd be interested to know how a dpf can be tested for function without interrogating the cars ecu as otherwise you have to force a regen cycle and then watch the stuff shoot out the back as its burned(ha!) off.

As above it seems like scare mongering. MOT testers already have enough to do and making them test even more will stretch the test out so fees will go up to cover the cost and who loses out the most? The motorist again.
Fuels already back to £1.05 in most places if not higher and the £30a year rfl is being abolished too... Christ if they saw the Irish system I bet osbourne would try that cack over here!

I'm not convinced that I feel happier breathing in diesel particulates now that I know we can debate the statistics behind the tally of the dead, instead of trying to fix what would appear to be a genuine problem.

To be honest if you looked at what a lot of cars 'actually' kick out you'd be surprised, the insignia ecp engine is 10x + over the max eu allowable limits. Not many cars make the cut, even some of the most Eco ones like the cactus are a few times over the limit in real world conditions which is why the testing system is changing to reflect the real world for emissions and mpg Smile
