Vibration whilst braking at speed - causes?

Hi All,

TL;DR - the brakes are **** and the steering wheel wobbles - what do I do?!

Our Disco has developed a slight vibration through the steering wheel under braking at motorway speeds (you don't notice it at slower speeds around town.)

It has had the V8 upgrade kit (Borg & Beck) from AF on the front since Jan 2015 but has only done low mileage in that time (a blown engine kept it off the road for a bit last year!) and new normal discs and pads on the rear for about 3 years and still relatively low mileage. It's probably done about 15k miles in 3 years.

I'm guessing the front discs are warped slightly but struggling to understand why, other than possible manufacturing defect. Could a sticking caliper cause this due to over-heating? I don't believe this is the cause as not noticed any symptoms but haven't really been looking.

Is there anything else that could cause steering wheel vibration under braking? (There is no vibration during normal driving, so ruling out wheel balance but open to be educated on this.)

What's the best way to investigate and quantify what could cause the vibration?

I've just ordered the V8 upgrade for the rear from AF plus new pads for the front as the brakes feel pretty poor generally but I want to resolve the vibration before I fit anything new, as it may mean the need for new front discs again. I've also got a slider overhaul kit and new EPB shoes ordered as may as well do a complete overhaul in one go.
 Cheers,

Gareth

Pretty convinced my vibration is down to worn lower arm bushes, as every other Censored thing has been replaced Evil or Very Mad

And, it was covered in a TSB on RRS/D4 Wink

If all your calipers are free, and pads not seized, I'd be tempted to put a new set of front discs on at the same time, just to be sure Thumbs Up

Probably not brakes but bushes need replacing, I had exactly the same issue, changed discs and pads but still there . Ended up with a set of new arms and bushes kit from AF, problem solved Thumbs Up

Interesting.

I should add that it had a complete overhaul of the front end (upper & lower arms, roll-bar bushes & drop links and inner & outer track rod ends) all done a couple of months after the discs.

So it best not be any of that Wink
 Cheers,

Gareth

My vibration seemed to happen after being parked up for 8 weeks. I out it down to corroded and rusty discs, but the vibration never fully went away and stayed away, even with new wheel bearings, discs, pads and calipers...

Wheel bearings were done at same time as the suspension and the tyres have done less than 5k, so again, I hope it shouldn't be any of them!
 Cheers,

I'll be really disappointed if it is the bottom arms as they've only been on for 11 months and done very low around-town mileage.

Once all the other brake stuff arrives from AF I'll strip it all down, clean everything, and see what I can see. Worst case will borrow some of my dad's old tools and see if I can measure any run out of the disc and take it from there.
 Cheers,

Gareth

I bet its the calipers i had the same thing. One of the pistons will be sticking.
I replaced the calipers and now its fine.

If the car has been sat around for prolonged periods I would suspect brake calipers or bearings
As it only occurs when braking then I would check calipers and pads for free movement and disks for corrosion.

A sticking brake caliper would force the car to Dance lambada because the brake force is not Applied evenly.

IMHO the discs are warped.

Try to take them off and clean the mating surfaces. Perhaps this will help already.

Finally sorted this.

New discs, pads and sliding pins and its as smooth as a baby's bum again. Only thing I can put it down to is the knackered hub bearings that were on when the old, new discs were fitted.

I went for Borg & Beck discs again and this time EBC Greenstuff pads - made a massive difference and improvement to the braking. Got the same for the rear in the form of a V8 upgrade to be fitted next weekend, which should add more braking power again.
 Cheers,

Gareth
