Maybe so, but I only really want this for offroad days and presumed (perhaps wrongly) that PMR and CB were the most common systems in use. You've got a 2m setup haven't you?
 I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

yes, Run a 2m rig in the car, have a wee tri-band handie (yaesu VX-7) and a yaesu ft 897 AS A HOME hf/6M/vhf/uhf RIG

Amat. radio gear has never been cheaper, my mobile rig sings, dances, has variable output upto 50watts RF and a full remote control mic and was under £100

Yup, CB Rolling Eyes As mentioned, only got it for offroad days. No plans to sit in a lonely layby on a hill above the nearest town taking part in "foxhunting" or arranging eyeballs with desperate truckers.

The query/comment about the SWR meter was based on the relatively poor range I experienced this morning, despite what seemed to be a decent SWR of about 1.2:1 It got me thinking that infinity might not be the indicated point on the meter, especially as the needle can go past this point (definition of infinite is.....?). I've another antenna I can play with so I don't need to mess up the new one by making it too short! As regards the SWR meter itself, it's just a cheap and cheerful model from Knights. Having only spent £40 on the rig, coax and mount I'm not going to go mad on test kit.
 I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

This one doesn't have a low power mode. I think it was just an odd one this morning. Went out at lunchtime to pick up a new tyre (that's now 8 Grabber AT2s purchased this year of which 6 remain servicable Embarassed ) and turned the idiot-magnet on to find the special people of Hants and Dorset using 19 as a porn chat room Rolling Eyes Sheep

When their was a break in their little fantasy world and after I stopped laughing I asked for a signal check and got a response of "Radio 4, Signal 6" from a bloke who was about 9 miles away along the general direction of my ground plane. Pretty happy with that. Thumbs Up

ND get your self a decent aerial
i had a derivative of this one at my parents house http://www.ekmpowershop5.com/ekmps/shops/r...ductid=117

i used scaffold poles and braces to lift the bse of the aerial just above the house ridge height....awesome site...

2 miles is not a lot in a car but then surprising what a poor quality air day will do to restrict trans/receiving

I may be wrong, but I think there's a decent chance I'd snap a 9.5m 4.5kg antenna off the roof of my D3 just getting out of my driveway. Shocked so I went with a Thunderpole Orbitor




Had a tweak yesterday evening and now the SWR is 1.1:1 across all channels
 I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

SWR or to give it the correct term - VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio)...... Actually,........ if you want a technical answer.... with all the formulae and graphs etc.......... see here

Laymans terms, the (V)SWR is a guage of how much of the RF prower that the rig is feeding into the antenna line is actually getting out from the antenna into the airspace between you and your good buddie Laughing

Think of it like filling your D3 with Diesel whilst holding the fuel nozzle about 2 feet away from the car. Shocked Then, the VSWR is a 'measure' of how much diesel lands on the floor. A perfect match (1:1) means you don't spill a drop and it all lands in the filler tube of thge D3. An acceptable 1.5:1 is a cupful landing on the deck. An unacceptable 3:1 has the cashier switching off the pump and 10:1 has the police arriving coz you're spraying the forecourt.

Where the radio is concerned, any amount of RF power that is not transmitted into the atmosphere is effectively going back into the rig and sufficent (>3:1) can cause the transmitter output PA to slow cook. Lots (10:1) will usually fry the PCB.
