I have done exactly this, gone from an 05 HSE to 11 SDV6 XS, that being said it is fully loaded with what must be pretty much all XS extras, leather with armrests, Bi xenons, full surround camera system etc, the things I really miss are the memory seats (really liked the lazy entry on the D3 but not available on D4) the fridge & the adaptive headlights. I don't find the seats any different to my dads 12my HSE.
Fridge is sat in the workshop ready to be fitted & I have activated 4x4 & timed climate, just need to sort the voice activation.

The one i was most pleased with was the 2005 HSE and i kept it for twice as long as either of the others. If i was to list the good/bad points it would be(my cars for comparison)-
Seats nicer in the D3-better quality, sides of lower cushion on D4 cracked at 70000 miles, still unmarked in D3 at 160000(lugano one) and counting
Interior seemed easier to keep clean and live with on the D3, harder wearing? Black D4 interior gloomy
D4 audio better (full iPod integration/DAB etc.)
Auto fold mirrors on D4 a nice feature (when locking)
Keyless start on D4 a nice feature
Bluetooth phone big improvement on d4
Satnav better on d4
Missed the pan roof of my first D3 even though i didn't think i would
Not a fan of the more bling look of the D4 but look good with black pack
Missed the Xenon lights of the D3 (halogens on my D4 xs)
Cheaper tax on silver car
Not a fan of colour coded arches, although they make the car look younger i prefer the unpainted black look
Both my D3s were remapped but the unmapped D4 still had the edge for power
Think thats about it, i suppose my ideal would be a D3 with low tax and a 3.0sdv6 (or better still tdv8!)
But until then i am back on the lookout for another D3
