What mileage is to high to buy a d3

Hi all I'm looking into buying my first discovery 3 Very Happy
There are a lot of discoverys at very high mileage that still look great inside and out

My question is if you were buying a d3 and all the paperwork was good all services done and bodywork and interior was all in very good condition, what mileage would be your limit? At what point would you walk away purely on the miles it had done

If you are buying a D3 in that price range you must bear in mind that there will be substantial bills from time to time, and I would suggest that you, at least in theory, set aside percentage of the purchase price, and a reasonable sum each month to meet these bills.

IMHO you would be well advised to consider a car for sale here, from an established member.

An indpendent garage mechanic said to me comncerning diesiel D3 that if it gets to high mileage then it is a good one??
I can see this up to a point but it does beg the original question?

But as you can see it is of no use to me!

Please do budget for the on going maintenance of the car... I've seen and heard too many horror stories here of people getting in to all sorts of financial strife due to some mechanical bad luck and simply not affording the upkeep.

These cars will cost you over £1000 a year in proper maintenance. That is before any major issues or anything breaking.

At £10k they may be Ford Fiesta budget but they demand the running costs of a £50,000 mechanical and technologically advanced machine.

If you have £1500 set aside as an emergency fund and are putting £100 a month away for maintenance then you'll be good Thumbs Up

You can cut those bills down if it'll be a toy and you don't rely on it so can do work yourself as and when you have time.

I have also heard
"By 100,000 miles any issues should have been sorted" lol I know less is better but I was wondering at what point they pass being well bedded in and start being worn out


I will be ok for repairs at that price range, I will still have a good savings/ repairs pot (or wedding extras and honeymoon pot if you ask the other half Laughing ) I'm considering putting a warranty straight on to for major failures

I've looked on here but not seen anything suitable yet, I want dark paint (black, Buckingham blue) and black leather. Buying from a forum is always the best option

Do your research carefully if you're wanting to put a warranty on the car as they are often mileage related. My extended LR warranty expired in August, at which time I had clocked up 120k (now 140k Rolling Eyes ) and I was unable to find a warranty company that would touch it (with anything sensible) despite having a full LR main dealer SH.

Car still drives as good as ever, but it gets painful with your fingers permanently crossed!

These cars are best used, and you usually find that if they have been used then they have been well maintained. I've owned mine 11 years and it has 187k on the clock. She is ridiculosuly reliable but things do wear out.

Don't bother with a warranty, just put the money aside to cover anything that needs doing. There is lots of info on here and avaiolable from members that will help you keep it going and reduce the bills. There are also some good sponsors that can either maintain your bus or provide quality parts to help you.

Good luck, but go in with your eyes wide open.

Your filling me full of confidence on my first foray in to land rover ownership Shocked Laughing

Are they really that bad? I will only be doing around 30 miles a day round trip to work so would hope the maintenance bill would be quite reasonable, service once a year and the odd repair here and there. As long as there is nothing catastrophic goes wrong like a new engine should be ok

I considered suggesting something similar.. the number I had in mind were £2k in the set-aside when you buy the car, and after having rectified all known faults with a new MoT, then put aside £200 per month.

I don't think that a warranty will be worthwhile, unless you can buy a car with an existing warranty from someone like Warranty Direct, and simply renew it annually.

30 miles a day round trip to work - i.e. 2 15 mile trips per day will be hard on the car - but better than 2 5 mile trips when it would never properly warm up.

when your all suggesting putting £100 - £200 away a month are you considering this an emergancy fund or are you expecting to spend £1000-£2000 a year on repairs? i was expecting to spend approx

£500 service and mot (should only need 1 a year with my millage)
up to £1000 on consumables (new tires breaks etc)
then an emergency pot for new suspension pumps etc (you should always have one in life so the car emergency fund will just be my life emergency fund)


i know repairs cant be predicted but i dont want to be spending 2k a year on breaks if i can help it

£2k available as an emergency fund plus adding £100 per month to a savings account would usually do it. Servicing and tyres on top of this. The forum and a bit of DIY does the rest.

so with the savings in place
how many miles max would you want on a d3

i'm assuming 100k is ok as long as its had the belts done

what about 120k or 140k

there is one near me on autotrader on 225k i'm assuming that is a bit high lol

i would rarther go for a hse or se than the more basic ones if i can but they have more miles for that money

Condition and previous owner pedigree is everything once you get above 100k. The actual mileage matters little from this point onwards.
