Switch from Standard Tyres to Off Road on 19"
OK, so I finally picked up mr MTR shod Shiny Black 19's from a fantastic tyre centre in Telford.
If anyone is in the area, Chris Hardy Tyres did me a great deal on swapping my Continental Cross Contact UHP 255/50/19s that came on my Black HSE wheels for some Goodyear Wrangler MT/R 255/55/19s.
He's also looking at getting a used D3 in a couple of months once his current 4x4 (Mitsi I think) runs out of lease. Impressed with his attitude and the work, as well of course on the mutually agreeable price
SO, here's my verdict on the switch over.
I had the standard Pirrelli Scorpion's that came with the car & they'd been on a few off road forays, but were startingto show some evidence of catching some stones here and there.
I've never had any problem with the Scorpions on the road and was concerned about how much noise the MT/R's would make in comparison.
I've only covered about 100 miles, but the biggest difference seems to be a slightly bouncier ride, maybe it's a little harsher due to the stronger sidewall. Nothing that i'd notice by the end of the weekend, which is why I'm writing this up now as it's still fresh in my head.
The handling round corners seems to be OK, but I haven't really been throwing it around. The Whoomp whoomp noise you get from the wheels is like a very very low volume sound & even having the radio on normal seems to cover it up. SWMBO didn't even notice anything, so it's only because I'm listening out for it (and I have a particularly keen sense of hearing) that I even notice it at all.
The off-road test will come at the Wiltshire trip unless I manage to get some action in this weekend.
But overall, I might even just leave these tyres on all the time, we'll have to see how the mileage wear goes. After Wiltshire, we're heading into Autumn/Winter and all the winter snow/rain so I may be just as well leaving them on.
They do look "well 'ard" though & transform it's stance IMHO.
So, 80% roads, 20% off road, I'd probably leave them on. Unless there's a particularly long time between the on and off road sessions (whereby I'll still probably leave them on )
So, permagrin fully installed with an extra twist to the smile.

Well worth leaving them on as changing them without an air jack is a pain in the ar$e. I take mine off as I found a 2mpg drop in fuel consumption and Mrs DSL was not keen on using them for long journeys.
The MTRs do look good on the D3!!!!

No concern breaking in the wet or even wet and and in a corner? In a wet corner he will break easy out. You seem to like a bit of Kamikaze to leave them in the summer on. Breakway in the wet is at least 50% longer as a roadtyre. as a recent test in a german 4x4 magazin shows.

Breakway 100km/h to 0km/h: Pirelli Scorpion STR; 44.6 meters. Colway C-trax MT: Metres 66.7 both on 16''. Ok it was not a Disco. But I'm sure this applys also to other cars. Of course this is for situations where you have to break hard and the every meter counts. It is a known fact about handling in the wet with MT as you can read this in any availabe tyer test. Ever done a handling training with the Disco 3 and MT. You find quickly out.

Ok You know best ....I'm not suggesting that they have the same level of grip as a Scorpion .....but 50% less in real world is bollacks TBH

I guess you're right about that in the real world . Of course the test are always for the extreme. But it shows tendencies that are also apply to the real world. What size and make MT's your driving? How much is the tread wear?

Got to disagree with the MTR's being worse in the wet. I run MTR's on both my D3's all the time. When either one of them is in for repair and I get a D3 with standard tyres on I really do not feel safe in the wet. The MTR's don't aquaplane as much as standard tyres. In fact I find my self driving a lot slower with standard tyres on. I have driven well over 100,000k with MTR's on in D3s. I expect that on a race track standard tyres may have better grip in the dry, however I bet the MTR's will give them a run for their money.
Just my opinion
Taking things one step further. When pushing the limits (in a safe place) there is a noticeable difference in the way the DSC works when comparing a D3 with standard tyres and MTR's. The MTR's don't let go as quick as the standard tyres do, so as a result the DSC reacts gentiler if you get my drift In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Now I'm getting very unsure. I wanted to buy the Grabber AT for my 18'' but if your very long experience you got good arguments . What MT is the good for 18 inches and which size? Are you using them also snow? I like to test drive MT's before a buy but there is no chance here.

On my way to work there's a roundabout where the tyres squeal as I go around (not sure why ) - never had a problem with my Scorpions, but I've lost the back of the car when on MTR's in the wet. However, this was a one off and may have been due to diesel spillage or similar. I just don't feel as confident in the wet now. There is no discernible difference in the dry, and braking distances feel no different at all.Disco 5 HSE Lux
