Removable tow bar thieves?

So... I live on a street with a reasonable amount of activity, people walking past etc and my car is right outside my window, being a light sleeper means not much gets past my drive without me knowing about it

However, I found my orange tow bar key in my centre console today. Not something I would normally worry about except the tow bar isn't attached. It hasn't been for some time and as I can't seem to find my towing cover for the rear I assumed I had removed the tow bar and put them both somewhere safe.

Now I am wondering if actually the tow bar has been swiped and I've not known.

Spare wheel is still there and that I'd have thought would have been number one target.

I didn't think you could remove the tow bar and remove the orange key...

If not and it has been nicked then how easy is a silent thieving as if have thought it'd need effort, effort which would have been more practically aimed at the spare which is still there happily.

It takes less than a minute with little effort to nick the detachable tow bar.

I have been to bluewater FC yes, is it a new hobby? Surprised the wheel didn't go as well!!

Yep time for some anti-theft...

What is the tow bar made from? Thinking a 12v accessory battery and an isolator switch Whistle

Never usually leave it on and have been very lucky so far over the year having never had a problem with thefts...

.... Still a £100 wake up call doesn't hurt as much as the £1000 would have so all in all nothing to cry over.

The rule to live by with these things is to use it and then remove it. That way it can't get stolen and it ties in with JLRs advice to remove when not in use to reduce wear on the housing.

Key can be removed from removable tow ball when off the vehicle by depressing the small plunger on the side of the part of the tow ball which fits into the rear crossmember. This normally occurs when you fit the item to the car and triggers the release of the locking plunger that secures it to the vehicle, thereby allowing you to remove the key as if it's fitted to your Discovery. I always do this and remove the tow bar as soon as I have done with it. Out of sight, out of mind.
