Front brake discs warping, again.

Following on from al cope's thread:
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic111147-30.html

My D4 has just had it's 4th set of pads and discs fitted, inc. the ones that it was built with. Due to the fact that they start to warp after c.5k miles.

This time, I caught it early having only noticed a slight judder through the steering wheel for the first time on Sunday, but from past experience once it starts it quickly gets progressively worse

The dealership found the the front N/S disc had started to warp, but that the hub run out and suspension components were all well within tolerances.

I'm keeping the LR "loan" HSE, for the time being, awaiting the reply from the EPQR that the dealer has raised. The level 4 LR tech. who is dealing with this is aware that just fitting new pads and discs isn't a permanent solution. So we'll see what happens. Not that I'm feeling particularly confident.

If anyone else had or has a similar problem, I'd be grateful if you'd post here. I'm going to put some effort into getting LR to sort this out and if it's a problem on other D4's it might help my cause.

I have mine going in on the 5th January for an assessment after getting on to LRCS after I raised the question when mine went in for service about the front discs warping after about 7000 miles. I contacted Pete and initially and it now its booked in for them to look at, so I will have to wait and see what the outcome is.

Mine has eaten through two sets in the same time period.

Been in at MJ Fews and they say possibly need new Steering Rack and steering wheel and approx £2k worth of work? Apparently a TSB was issued but I may of been mistaken.

Still awaiting the confirmation.

Well it's either that or blame the driver for gripping the wheel too tightly. Whistle

I've seen that TSB, and its for brake shake symptoms on D4 and RRS, and does indeed have steering rack, and even steering wheel replacement (the updated steering wheel has damper weights in it), but its dependent upon VIN number as to what gets replaced. Mine didnt fall into the VIN range for anything other than discs and pads replacement

I got my D4 back last Saturday, having had the use of a Land Rover (as opposed to the dealers) 2015 HSE since two days before Xmas. It's now on its 4th set of front discs and pads, which equates roughly to a set every 5k miles.

I had a good chat with the sales manager and we're now awaiting LR's response. The prospect of a replacement vehicle was briefly discussed, although of course the HSE is no longer available to order, so the Landmark would be the nearest in spec..

I believe that under the SOGA, I'd have a good case to reject the vehicle. What I'd really like is to have the cause of the problem solved and some redress for my inconvenience.

I'll update when I know more.

I spoke to the dealer today. All LR are prepared to do is offer a goodwill payment of £300.

Uhh, that will sort the problem out then. FFS!!!!!!! Banging Head

Off to contact LRCS myself now, once the dealer has emailed me the information on when the discs were changed etc.

Hi Paul. Yes it's on a PCP with Land Rover finance (can't recall who runs that of the top of my head). This means that they, not me, are the owner. Which will complicates the matter if I go down the formal rejection route.

I'm really hoping that some common sense and customer loyalty (3 new & 1 used Disco's since 2006) will prevail. I've pm'd Ryan at LRCS, with all the details, so we'll see.

Under the SOGA, the vehicle is neither "fit for purpose" or "of satisfactory quality". At least IMO it isn't.
I can't see how it couldn't be, if it's warping the front discs every 4-5k miles, which is about every 3 months for me.

The offer of a £300 "gesture of goodwill", isn't a good start though. Twisted Evil

I sent Ryan (LRCS) a PM last night. He called me first thing this morning and has arranged for my D4 to be returned to the dealer for inspection by LR techs. I'll be supplied with a replacement D4.

So top marks so far to Ryan Thumbs Up

Dropped the D4 back at the dealers this afternoon and picked up a bright blue MY15 HSE.

My gut feeling is that the n/s hub is fractionally out, but the techs at the dealership say that they're both within the LR tolerances. As such, they're not authorised to start replacing parts under the warranty. Will be interesting to see what the specialist LR techs who travel around the dealerships have to say.

This is the last chance they'll have to fix it though.

LR have finally seen sense and authorised the dealer to change the hubs.

I'm pretty confident that this will solve the matter. Fingers crossed.
