Ok update. I will be going to meet Geoff who has opted to help fix the cable problem.
Now the car has decided to allow the central locking to work but the stereo surround lights do not turn off after car is locked and make the battery run flat constantly.
Is this problem linked as I have got the lights around the stereo to turn of once when I managed to lock the car with fob.

My stereo / clock did the same. V annoying as used to have to do hard resets twice a week. Never fixed mine and did try lots of things. Replaced the head unit and been fine ever since.James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

I really hope I don't have to buy another stereo, I love the practicality of this car and I sold my E-Class to buy one but now I am just thinking to fix it and sell it to avoid more problems in the future.
Thanks for the info i'll have to check into these this weekend.
Appreciate the responses and help from all has been a very welcoming site to be a part of

The splice is often buried in the middle of the wiring, I've had a couple that are much further up, in the plastic covered section that goes underneath the metal 'bridge'.
Easier to get at with the seat out. Bodsys Brake Bible
