Flare into 4th

Trying to gauge level of concern so your thoughts would be much appiricated.

Vehicle covered 140k miles. Revs rise (I'd call it gearbox "flare") 200rpm, under light-medium throttle between 3-4th gear. Gearbox flushed within last 5k miles which made limited changed. Shifts are smooth with no judder (so I presume not just a Mr. Tranny fix). Apparently not any worse in last year.

Is this likely to get much worse / break all together. Specially interested as intend put 2.5 tons behind it in a few weeks!!

I assume torque converter / gearbox. Age old problem but interested to know the costs really.

When my TC was failing there was no judder but revs fluctuated and was worse with the caravan on rear. I stopped driving it until TC replaced. I did not the ATF to overheat and damaged the autobox. New TC and all was good. That was 50,000 miles ago. In next 20,000 I will have ATF flushed.
 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Shift flare is not a usual symptom of TC problems on this trans, especially on an upshift - as Barn1e said the usual symptoms are shuddering under load and cyclic rise/fall of RPM at a constant speed.

The main cause of flare shifts on 6HP26 would be valve body related - ie:
-Clutch control valve or boost valve for whichever clutchpack(s) operates 4th gear
-Pressure regulator valve
-Lubrication control valve

Interesting, must admit I hadn't seen many reports of shift flare. I think otherwise it drove fine so maybe the TC is ok.

I'm planning to phone the warranty company and a or specialist tomorrow to see what kind of price to expect.

Does this issue usually get much worse with a trailer? Really need the car next week to tow to horse show :p.

Flare is caused by a clutch pack taking longer than normal to engage (slow hydraulic build up, a leak somewhere blowing off hydraulic pressure, bore wear in the valve body for example)

Because of the increased load required to move the horse float, I would imagine it would probably get worse, yep. I would keep an eye on it and drive with the problem in mind.

Have you seen any difference in command shift? ie, higher line pressure may have a positive impact the problem

Errrrm, it appeared slightly better in command shift but still apparent.

Long story but this is a car I'm looking at buying, it's pretty much immaculate otherwise, probably the cleanest I've seen. Really want to do the deal but this gearbox issue would keep me up at night if I didn't know roughly what to expect to pay to have it sorted!

Looking for comfort really, what do I need to budget to sort an otherwise mint car. Normally I think it'd be sensible to walk away but this car is so clean and tidy I think it might be worth spending the money.

So to clear up this thread I bit the bullet, bought the car, truly finished off the gearbox towing the horse box around the country a few hundred miles. Then sent it in for a rebuild and new trans ecu.

Cost shy of £3.5k parts and labour included. Just about getting the gearbox relearn the now, I'm very particular about shift quality, particularly when the vehicle is going to be towing it needs to be right.

Lovely otherwise.
