Engine Light On & Turbo SLow to Kick In

Yesterday the engine light came on in my Disco 3 08 model. I have noticed that sometimes, at slower speeds the turbo doesn't kick until about 25-30 MPH. Its booked into the garage in a week.

Any ideas what might be the cause?

EGR valves. Thumbs Up

My recommendation is to blank them (which needs a software patch for your vehicle). Wink

Now you mention it, I has the same problem with one of my works diesels a couple of times which was the EGR valve. Is it an expensive job? What difference does blanking it make?

Blanking means the engine breathes only fresh air, reducing carbon build up, prevents the possibility of another failure, and potentially increases MPG a little. You won't get any extra power from it over standard, but full power will be restored. Thumbs Up

Shouldn't cost more than a few hundred in all, but it is very important that the person who modifies the software knows how to do it sympathetically. Therefore, you should ensure it's a reputable company such as BAS or Alive Tuning, for example. Many choose to have a remap at the same time. Wink

I'll change it. I think it's because, being temporary, I used the link to another site option rather than being hosted on the forum. Thumbs Up

In the interests of balance and free-choice: a new EGR valve is about £170 and takes a couple of hours for an expert to fit (it's a b Censored d of a job if - like me - you've never done one previously. Embarassed ). Blanking your EGR valves will drastically increase the amount of poisonous NOx your car emits, which is a major problem in cities. It's your choice. Thumbs Up

BTW Get your codes read, too, because the symptoms of a stuck turbo actuator are very similar, and that's much, much easier to fix. Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the info. I gave it a bit of a blast for about 20 miles at motorway speeds and soon after, the light went out. Maybe it will come back on, maybe not but I'm going to see what happens before taking it in to the garage

Access the turbo actuator through the left wheel arch. Give it a spray of WD40 and a wiggle. Hopefully that'll be the end of the problem. If not, the sticky ERGV will arise again! Thumbs Up
