8 speed really worth an extra £7k?
Hi all,
Im in the final stages of considering two D4s. One is a 2012 8 speed for £37k (25k miles), the other is a 2010 6 speed for £30k (£30k miles).
I had always had my heart set on the 8 speed, but is it really worth an extra £7k? Whats the actual difference, does it feel like a smoother ride or something like that, or is it solely down to fuel economy?
Were there any other improvements to the 2012 over the 2010 model?
Any and all advice/opinions appreciated,
J

Not very technical reply but I went from the 2010 TDV6 ( I moved to this from a manual D3 to this and didn't really like it) to the 2013 SDV6 and the difference was dramatic.
So much smoother and better (slightly) MPG.
and your difference of £7k is not just on the gearbox but on 2 years newer as well
I am sure there will be others who can give a more detailed review of the twoD4 HSE - Aintree Green

As GlosBoy says the £2k difference is also for a newer car, I went from a MY2011 6 speed to a MY2012 8 speed and I would say the later car seems to be a perfect match with the engine to gearbox, it just seemed so much smoother. I had nothing against the 6 speed it is still a brilliant car but the 8 speed is the icing on the cake, if it were my money I would go for the later car with the 8 speed Cheers Ian

Would agree with all the above, had manual D3 and a D4 6 speed then went to the 8 speed, soooooooooooo much better.
The D3 was lovely, the first D4 was great and the second D4 was a massive jump againMY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Sorry to wander away from the original question, but you could buy the 2010 and use the 7k to buy the 54 plate SE D3 someone is advertising on the forum as a spare/ toy? (and still have change for a mod or two).
Don't think the gear box difference alone is worth £7k but the entertainment system in 2012 is definitely an improvement and updates to the sat nav are available by usb whereas the 2010 has to be updated by the dealer.
Lower miles as well on the 2012 - if you can afford the extra then I think it's worth paying for but if not you won't be disappointed with the 2010

I have now done 12k in an 8 speed after 112k in a 6, and I wouldn't pay any more money for the 8. What I gained in smoothness at higher speeds I lost at lower, as it gets caught in the wrong gear. And the mpg is worse.d4 HSE

As others have said, the additional £7k is for a vehicle that is 2 years younger. That's £3.5k pa.
So yes, I'd say it was worth the extra £7k for a newer D4 with the 8 speed box.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Get the 8-Speed they are just better and its two full model years on.
I have a 2012-62 SDV6 HSE just gone on sale today 20 minutes from London...
SWMBO has an MY10 HSE, a great car & a big step up from my MY06 HSE (though the older one had better spec inside such as rear aircon), mine is an MY12 HSE & it's a step up again.
Newer, slicker box with 8 speed & less miles = no hesitation, you'll not stop smiling.Paul.
