Re: 8 speed really worth an extra £7k? |

jd10 wrote:Hi all,
Im in the final stages of considering two D4s. One is a 2012 8 speed for £37k (25k miles), the other is a 2010 6 speed for £30k (£30k miles).
I had always had my heart set on the 8 speed, but is it really worth an extra £7k? Whats the actual difference, does it feel like a smoother ride or something like that, or is it solely down to fuel economy?
Were there any other improvements to the 2012 over the 2010 model?
Any and all advice/opinions appreciated,
J
Ive had both and its 8 speed all the way for me just think, you could have a had a 2012 8 Speed for under £20k recently, but sellers keeping her for the moment D4 2012 Orkney Grey SDV6 GS 8 Speed - Awesome
D3 2007 Stornoway Grey TdV6 XS - gone but definitely not forgotten

Newer, slicker box with 8 speed & less miles = no hesitation, you'll not stop smiling.
I was going to ask, has the hesitation issue suffered by the D3 now been eradicated with the 8 speed ?
i.e coming to a junction slowing down, gap in traffic foot back on accelerator and nothing for a split second no power no drive. I know it was a character of the ZF gearbox and BMW X5 suffered from it also. Looking at coming back to Disco ownership.

I have no experience of the speed 6 to compare to my speed 8 MY12 that I bought 2 months ago. Mine does exactly that, quite annoying and disconcerting. I find it slightly better if quickly select Sport mode..
But seems it's still an issue. Whether later models still do, can't say obviously, but I did have a MY15 for a day before I got mine, and I did notice it then too. MY2012 D4 HSE Nara Bronze with some extra stuff

I have driven a fair distance in both 6 and 8 speed box. Of course the 8 is an improvement otherwise it would never of been fitted but personally I didn't, and still don't like the dash dial over the stick (albeit I wish the stick looked more premium than it does) and it would never be a deal breaker for me.
I would always look at spec, service history and quality of vehicle. Gear box is well down the list for me when buying

The 8 speed is much better. Worth the extra in my opinion. I've had both, and the 8 speed has far less hesitation than the 6, although it still does sometimes take a moment.

Had manual 6 and 8 speed. The 8 speed is by far superior, its not just the gearbox its all the other bits that have been tweaked and the better performance on top of that the resale will be higher for the 8 speed, so if you can afford it 8 speed all the way MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Agree with Gareth and Russell on the overall benefit in the 8 speed ...ref hesitation the 2015MY is much better than my 2013MY which was only improved after applying the latest engine and gearbox software. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

My 2010 6 speed doesn't suffer with any hesitation at all, well not that I've noticed anyway, and I'm a bloody nightmare for stuff like that, I find the box really nice and smooth. I've not driven the 8 speed, so would be interested to try it to make a comparison.

Thanks for the replies, I guess it will never disappear completely unless they use a dual clutch system
