Parking Sensors

Hi,

My Parking Sensors are playing up. They do this from time to time but a car wash seems to resolved except this time a car was is not resolving the issue. Is there anything obvious I can do to check?

Basicly when I put in revers they beep continually as if I am too close to a parked car when in fact im not.

Thanks in advance.

Wel.. if you aint got a diag tool then you have to do it the hard way.

I guess its one of the rear ones? does the beeping comes from back or the instrument cluster?

Remove the LH rear lamp cluster and have a look at those connectors you find there. look for evidence of water. thats the easy check. Order up a new parking sensor that fits the rear. undo the bumper and unplug one sensor and connect it to the new one. check to see if the beeps are there nor not. if its still there, plug in the old one and continue to the next one untill the beeps are gone, then you have found the fault sensor, put all back together and jobs done.

It might be the wiring, but I doubt that cause of your description.

This happent to me. it was the Right Outer Rear on mine..

I had intermittent rear parking sensors on my D3. Turned out to be a corroded wire in the loom. Easy to change once you have the bumper off. Good chance to give The back of the bumper a good clean.

Its the rear ones for sure. Ill check the connectors behind the light cluster that's easy. Removing the bumper sounds a little more like a garage job me thinks Smile

Just took off the LH Rear Light Cluster. Had a look at the connections and all seem OK and Clean Dry and Dusty. I'm guessing its a Sensor that needs replacing. Ill order one and see if the Garage can resolve? Bumper looks a mission to remove and fit?

With ignition on and in reverse (engine not running of course), you should be able to hear them clicking as you pass your hand in front of each one individually.........
the one that isnt clicking should be the culprit.

QQ - If they all 'click' ok does that definitely mean they are working and it's the loom? Or is it possible for them to click and still be faulty?
 Finally got one......Silver HSE.

Still got the issue and its becoming a real pain for me! So reading some other posts theres other things to look out for. Putting in Reverse and listening close to each sensor. All of them are clicking so seems the sensors are doing their job? No Flashing on the Parking Sensor Button.

Really Frustrating :S

I do have front sensors and they work fine. No Warning... Just when I put in reverse it just beeps continualsy. Sometimes they work OK and sometimes they beep as if I am pulling up close to something but I'm no where near anything :S

All 4 are clicking if I put my ear to them :S

Select reverse and find the bite point on the clutch. If the system detects a fault it should:
a) Give a long, loud single tone (to warn you not to trust the PDC) which only lasts a few seconds;
b) Flash the LED on the dash switch (assuming the LED is not blown);
c) Perhaps flash up a message on the info. display telling you whether the fault is front or rear.

If none of this happens, and all 8 sensors are clicking, and what you hear is the same tone you get when something is near, then the control unit clearly thinks the system is fine (or is faulty itself). It's as if there's grease or water in/on one of the sensors and the ultrasonic pulses really are bouncing back, even when there's no obstruction near. You could unclip the sensors and check whether any are damaged or letting in water, but be careful to push them inwards to avoid this:

You could substitute one new sensor and see if that clears the fault, but it's tricky, especially if it's intermittent Exclamation

Chafed wires and/or water ingress into the wiring loom is common, but this usually throws up the error response above. You'd have to remove the relevant bumper, check for visible faults and continuity test each wire in the loom (disconnect the sensors and test for both short-circuits and open-circuits).

Alternatively, you could buy a new loom and 4 sensors and just switch the lot. So long as they're not genuine LR, they are reasonably priced and you'd still save a fortune on dealer labour.

Happy fault finding Exclamation

Thought I would add to this thread as I have the following problem:
- Continual beep when reverse selected
- Beeper almost sounds like it is being strangled!
- No faults showing on any sensors
- I can test each for fault detection by creating a fault by disconnecting each (and then clearing faults afterwards)
- All 4 sensors clicking
- Checked continuity on all wires in the loom - all ok
- Checked for any damaged wires as best I can see where they enter the car - the side cubbyhole trim is very close, but looks ok.

So, I think one of the senors is working but thinks something is in front of it.

Unless someone suggests anything more to try I will be giving the areas behind the bumper a clean and does of Dinitrol and putting it back together whilst I order a new sensor or 4 Shocked Sods law says I buy 1 and find 2 are faulty.

Did you check for shorted wires in the loom or just broken ones?

I've had cheap sensors from the this e-bay seller without a problem: green_parts (1955) I'm sure you could off load any spares on this forum. Thumbs Up

Good thinking DDAD. The loom is still on the workbench. I will test again for any shorts.
