steel bumper on order...

So I've placed an order for the TRC steel bumper as advertised on discoveryparts.de... Have placed the order straight to the guy who makes them, so it was a hell of a lot cheaper than any other I've seen and, I think at least, looks really agressive (which is the look I like Mr. Green ).
Has anyone else got one of these fitted? I'm sure I've seen a few discos on here with steel bumpers... what are they like to fit, apart from the obvious things like weight and bulk etc? Gonna take 4-6 weeks to get to me, just hoping it arrives before i go to Canada for 3 months or I'm not gona be able to stop fidgeting till I get back Laughing

Mega bit of kit, slight trimming of inner and outer arches required along with washer bottle removal, a smaller one is provided. Already had a fiesta drive into mine resulting it's lots of damage to him and none to me Mr. Green

I do suggest getting a set of RI D2s and replace the rather poor fog lights with them, I modified my fog loom and have had no problems, front Pdc works fine too.

 So far Fiona has:
TRC front winch bumper / GG AT tyres
Warrior 9500s winch / Aux Fuel tank
Mantec sump guard / Kaymar rear bumper w/swing away
RI D2 light pair / de-cat exhaust
RI 10in flood/spot bar / LR puddle lights
Optima yellow top / Prospeed tree/rock sliders
Spilt charge system / Light guards

well, I've just gotten back from 2 months of exercise on the prairie in Canada, was really excited thinking that I'd have a nice shiny new bumper to fit but lo and behold.... nothing....
Not a single email awaited me containing shipping information, or any news regarding delays of any kind. I emailed the bumper guy and got a response claiming moving house and that the bumper would be shipped soon, but I'm beginning to feel a tad suspicious about the whole thing.
Any one else have any problem getting this bumper? I've payed €1500 to the guy for a bumper that should be on my disco by now. Concerned would be an understatement.

No good Evil or Very Mad

But you may have recourse on how you made the payment.
If you get total blanks from the guy, then I'd go straight to whoever you made the payment through.
Certainly if it's a credit card, the company will refund you.

He's replied saying he'll ship and send the tracking details by the end of the week... I'm giving him till Sunday and then I'll be contacting my bank about getting the money back. Really hoping it is just a delay, it's one of the best looking bumpers I've seen and the people who have been able to get hold of one have nothing but good things to say about it... Big Cry

Is that even legal?

Manufacturers design bumpers that offer some protection to pedestrians and bull bars are illegal. How can a bumper of solid steel be safe for a pedestrian in a collision?

What happens to the crumple zone designed to protect the vehicle occupants? Surely this thing would render that useless too?

Why would anyone NEED to fit such a thing?

Why would anyone WANT to fit something that almost guarantees death to any pedestrian you hit?

UMM front or back bucket of a JCB hitting you ??

Front or back of a lorry ??

A tractor ??

A defender ??

3tonn discovery hitting you aint going to hurt much...

All going to cause same damage .

A winch sticking out of your bumper ??

Off roading is a pleasure to do and its going to protect your discovery I cant see your problem .

Yup, it is indeed legal. doesn't have any bullbars on top so that's not a problem either.

the reason I need to fit this is because I want to fit an external winch and have better approach angles with more protection for my front end... I also think it looks really good, which is the same reason most people have for NEEDING to fit 20" wheels, or chrome bling, or colour coded arches.

Seems like you're trying to be outraged, just to be outraged... people have fitted steel bumpers to defenders, jeeps and all other manner of 4x4's for decades, you outraged at those?

Not outraged at all.

Only issue is Defenders were released from the factory with a steel bumper, while the D3 had a plastic one. Just like fitting HID conversions into a halogen bulb, it's technically not legal due to type approval. But many people still do it. Just being a little naughty Mr. Green

Similarly, oversize tyres, lifted suspensions, etc etc... all have dubious legality and might be the perfect "escape clause" for your insurance company in case of an expensive accident....

What is an acceptable risk for you is only up to you to decide Thumbs Up

I think if a 3 ton disco hit you at anything more than 20mph the material the bumper is made from would be the least of your worries.

Wind you neck in soldier, you ain't on exercise now!

The PC brigade get all sorts of rules passed re not hurting idiots who run out in front of vehicles. So it may well be that you can't retrofit a steel bumper to a vehicle normally fitted with a deformable one.

How putting a great solid winch on is legal unless you are a 'Recovery Vehicle' under the DVLA definition is also weird.

I'm old school and that Landrover 90 in my Avatar has winches front and rear, bull bars and full roll cage but is it truly legal?

should I pin my ears back as well? -_-

just defending my choice of vehicle accessory is all... there are plenty of people in the UK who have fitted aftermarket bumpers to all kinds of cars... I've seen several ARB bumpers on discos in the UK, and disco 2's were originally fitted with plastic bumpers and they've been getting swapped for steel ones for years as well...

guess I'll find out if it's truly allowed the first time I drive past a cop car Mr. Green ... if it turns up first -_-
